ESPN is doing a neat series on the "Face of the Team" that allows readers to choose who best identifies a particular school's program. The choices for BG are:

Josh Harris
Urban Meyer
Doyt Perry

Makes sense to me. Urban Meyer is one of the hottest names in college football, and has been for about 3-4 years. A lot of people know that he got his coaching start at BG, and many of them would not have heard of BG if not for that.

The name recognition for Urban far surpasses that of Doyt & Harris combined. I'm sure a large percentage of college football fans have never even heard their names.

I usually have to think twice when I hear Meyer's name to remember that he coached at BG. It's good to see that ESPN's pick was DLP and not surprising that the "SportsNation" pick is Shelley's husband. I bet ten of the 950 people that have voted so far have ever even been to BG.

However, what I'M more interested in is how do I get Adam Rittenberg on the writing staff at BGSUsports.com. He does such good work!

Instead of Josh Harris as the only player on the list, I'd rather see Phil Villapiano as a candidate. He was a great example of hard-nosed defense that BG was noted for in the late 60's and early 70's. Had an excellent NFL career, a 2nd round draft pick, and was probably the premiere BG player in pro football ever since he played on one Super Bowl champion, appeared in four pro bowls, and as such his college school (BG) was so often mentioned.

Agreed. Most probably think the school is in Kentucky, but they know Urban's name so they vote for him.

I've never been to bgsusports.com, but did anybody notice the counter for the BG Minny game from last year? It's at negative 291 days. That is hillarious!

That's questionable. What educated BG fan would consider Josh Harris a more intrigal part of the BG program than Doyt Perry? Probably the ones that don't realize the stadium is named after one of the two. Given the choice between the two you shouldn't even have to ponder that for more than a half-second before coming up with the correct answer.

I know it's ancient history to some but he was a member of the Super Bowl Champion Oakland Raiders. Had a long 12 year NFL career as a starting LB and as I said was a four time Pro Bowler. Probably an extreme outside chance to be a HoFer some day. I believe he also appeared on the old ABC quasi sports show "Superstars" hosted by Howard Cosell.

Not to pick on you Moneymaker, but I do find it kind of sad that some of the newer BG fans do not remember some of the greatest athletes in BG history like Villapiano, Nate Thurmond, Howard Komives, Ken Morrow, and Dave Wottle who all went on to achieve at a high level in there sport in the future. I know you can say, "Hey I wasn't even born then." but it doesn't take much effort to go beyond Josh Harris to find truly great players at BG, and I didn't even mention Bernie Casey who was before my time.

Where was Alonso Rojas on that list? Best high school punter in the nation.
