Is the MAC a canabalistic Conference?

Would anyone agree that the MAC is our own worse enemy? I know we have a poor record against OOC games, but we are starting to dismantle each other. I think this actually hurts our rep because we don't really have a defining team that is successful year in and year out. Our conference can go either way every year and the last couple season have justified this statement. We can almost have a 5-7 team win the friggen conference and this is whom will represent the MAC in a bowl game. It's actually almost embarrassing. Any comments? I'm just looking for answers here.

In years where the MAC actually has a good football team that team does not struggle within the conference.

They have beaten up on each other in recent years because there hasn't been a truly good team in this league since '03.

Look back, '03 Miami & BG did not struggle in conference. The Marshall teams of old didn't struggle in conference. UT's best teams had no trouble in the league.

The problem is not the league beating up on itself. The problem is there not being any legitimately good football teams in the league.

The problem in my estimation, is a combintion of Toledo, Miami, Bowling Green, etc falling back to the middle of the pack, and perennial doormats Central Michigan, Ohio, Akron, Kent State, etc, rising up from the dead. The bad teams aren't as bad as they used to be, either.

Of course, the MAC East is likely to revert back to the days of old, as Miami and BG should be fighting for the division crown all season long. The only other team I could see in the mix is Temple. The West though, still seems to be a bit out of whack. I really don't have a clue who's going to prevail out that direction.

I've heard this explanation a lot...

A lot of the athletes that are of MAC caliber want to go where they can play right away, which creates a swing in talent levels. If Toledo, Miami, and BG have nice athletes and are winning, the athltes want to play at Central, Ball State, etc. where they can start sooner.

I completely agree with this and can see it happening quite a bit.

Right now its all about who has the best athletes, in the late 90's and early 2000's besides having great athletes, schools like BG and Miami were running the spread more profeciently than anyone else, and defenses hadn't caught up. Unfortunately we haven't really seen the next evolution of offensive schemes to put defensive co-ordinators on their heels.

CMU is anything but a perennial dorrmat. They had no losing seasons from 1978-1994...although they went thru a rough time from the late 90's until 2006. They've won back to back MAC titles....

Now Ohio, Akron and Kent State? Those are perennial doormats.

EMU isn't even the nice doormat that you have inside the door. No, it's the cheesey rubber one that stays outside in the crappy weather all year round.

Yeah, EMU sucks every freaking year. And to think I didn't even mention the biggest doormat of all. Buffalo. I oughta smack myself over the head for that.

The MAC became its own worst nightmare. To many schools and every redheaded step child that ones to either move up to D1 because of well outdated requirements for that level allow it. for some strange reason, some one thought an east an west woul be a good idea and allowing more teams....well adding more bad teams does not make a better conference.
the better teams and we all know who they are should split off if there is to be hope for real year in and year out over all competitiveness...the conference is to big, for the wrong reasons.

Too many schools from the same states.

We had Kent.... we never needed to add Akron.

We have too many Michigan schools.

We have added just to ad, and we have never added a valuable commodity to the conference.

Just think at one time UC was in the MAC.

r4e ... I'm with you on a lot of your post. Not sure if I agree about the Michigan schools, but we definitely have been conservative in our conference-building approach.
