New QB Commit is a Big Time Player

Post by falconfan1 »

Rivals lists Willoughby South QB Patrick Nicely as committing to Bowling Green after a weekend of visits to Ohio U and BG. Nicely is rated by Rivals as the number 19 pro style QB nationally.

Patrick held several MAC offers- including Ohio- and he apparently was high on the radar screen of many big, big schools. A few of these were waiting to check out Patrick's early 2008 season, but he must have felt he would go with the school that spent the most time with him and that was in early on him. Rivals quotes his Dad as saying they were in BG today which means they were very serious about an early decision. You see more and more players doing that to concentrate on that senior season.

No doubt, our spread scheme (also employed by W South), our QB coach/coaching staff and facilities played a role too. Let's face it; we have some big time facilities to show recruits. Nicely has a chance to be a super player at BG; he brings good size and a strong and accurate arm.

His HS team has a killer opening schedule with Columbus Bishop Watterson and Euclid early. Welcome Patrick!

Go Falcons!

Man, I'm sorry, but I've got to do it. We've got board grammar police standards to uphold.

"Nicely" is an adverb.

The "ly" is a dead giveway...adverbs often end in "ly".

This is a big time get...I think he's rated *** by both Rivals and Scout and he was getting some serious interest from Boston College. I think I've seen some video on him. Looks to be reasonably mobile with a pretty good arm...not Nate Davis good...but good

Without clicking that link, I'm guessing, Lolly Lolly Lolly Get your Adverbs here?

School House rock was awesome.

As to the QB, sounds like a pretty good get. Scout has him at only 2 stars, and not ranked nearly as high as Rivals does, but that is the nature of recruiting rankings. The stories they had on him were that he played very well at OSU camp and was hoping for an offer from the Buckeyes, but they didn't sound like they wanted to take a QB this year.

Thanks for the update, ff1. With the offense we run and facilities we have now in place, it's hard for kids not to take a serious look at BGSU.

He sounds like a great get. He comes from the same HS as Jeff Fink!

It is really great that we are starting to get names that people have heard of and have been talked about at length as great players...I think it's happening more and more each year!

ESPN has him committed to Ohio Univ ;-)

Nicely is a pocket passer that happens to be a good athlete and could play in the spread or pro-style attack. He has good size and strength and is capable of standing in the pocket, delivering the football in the face of the rush and is tall enough to scan the entire field. He shows good footwork and set up from both the shotgun and from under center. Possesses adequate-to-good arm strength and is most effective on underneath and intermediate routes. When on time and in rhythm he can be an effective guy that will move the chains. Throws a soft, catchable ball, displays solid accuracy and does a good job leading receivers on underneath routes. Appears to possess solid leadership and toughness in the pocket, has the presence to move a round and buy time and when he takes off and runs, he can be a load to bring down when he gets that frame rolling. Has better foot speed than you would imagine given his appearance. However, Nicely can be a "pusher" instead of a passer with his delivery mechanics. Really props the ball up high by his ear and you can tell that he has to cock and pull back to get any real power on his deep throws. Is not an overly smooth or fluid passer with his release. Must develop better timing with routes that require a quick five step, no re-set throw--- especially outside the numbers. Overall, Nicely has some redeeming qualities, is a good athlete and his size is excellent. He will continue to develop and hopefully improve arm strength a bit. Solid prospect.

South senior quarterback Patrick Nicely keeps rolling on the football camp circuit. After strong performances at camps at Penn State and Cleveland Browns Stadium for elite high school players, Nicely was named the top overall offensive performer at Ohio State's Senior Day Advance Camp last Sunday.

Nicely said there were more than 400 players at the camp, and close to 45 quarterbacks that he was competing against. "It was fun to throw the ball around and gauge where I am against some of the top players in Ohio," Nicely said. "I think I did really well, and I was happy with my passing and my footwork."

Obviously, Nicely's performance made a couple of college recruiters happy as well. Nicely received two more official offers while at OSU on Sunday. Akron and Ohio University have joined MAC member Bowling Green in offering Nicely a scholarship.
The 6-foot-4, 200-pound Nicely said he was told he needs to work on pocket presence and his accuracy, but that he has the arm strength and the intelligence to play in the Big Ten. He is now officially on Ohio State's radar as well. "I'm always looking to get better, but I pride myself on working really hard," Nicely said.

WELCOME TO THE NEST???

GO FALCONS!!

Who's right?

Interesting that Rivals ("usually" pretty accurate) would make this kind of a mistake...(ESPN definitely lists him committing to OU)....
First thought...why would a "non-running" style QB want to go to OU's offense?
2nd thought...Nicely has played against Pankrast (sp) from Nordonia, our only true frosh QB on scholarship..not counting Tanski in the mix just yet. Perhaps sees too much competition immediately ahead of him? I know that OU supposedly signed a big time option style QB who's there now too.
Final thought...like we've said with all these kids...we'll see come the 1st week of FEBRUARY...but it's still interesting to me to see how many kids are committing early... (CMU has 21 right now).
Education our Challenge, Excellence our goal. (look it up)
