Was Denny Stolz successful here? Did he precede Don Nehlen?

He was right after Nehlan. He had reasonable success here, including 2 conference titles, but never could win a bowl game. 85 was his last year when they went 11-1. Unfortunately, it seems he will always be remembered for the way he left more than anything else he did while he was here. That was pretty rotten though.

Stolz came after Nehlen. Took the team to two bowl games, but only decided to show up for one of them... took a job at San Diego State the week of the '85 Cal Bowl and left the team hung out to dry.

He put together one of THE best teams BG ever put on the field.
Then he put the screws to them.
Tool.

Going by memory, which is hazy, didn't Stoltz get reassigned to golf coach at SDSU?

My favorite memory of Denny was when I was walking on my frosh year in '81 as a kicker. Kit Cartwright the DB coach was holding for me and told Denny "8 for 10 from 40 Coach". He proceeded to watch the next kick go through and said "I don't like how its not end over end". ( For some weird reason, or most likely due to wind,it was not end over end but spinning on its side).
My thought at the moment was "Your team is currently 0-4, you should take points anyway you can get them", but I held my tongue which had a lot to do with the tryout continuing.

tiznow - correct
JSwoop - And Denny always referred to his punt return unit as "the punt catch team" because that's all he wanted them to do!
He was an odd bird, to say the least.
And a tool. Did I mention that?
BTW, I have that ill-fated bowl game on video. No idea why I never burned that d**n tape.

Hey, I'd still take Denny over Moe any day.
