Time to give Beam a chance?

Before anyone gets their panties in a bunch , I'm not saying Sheehan needs to be benched. I'm saying maybe we should be trying to work Beam in here and there to see what he can do. I'm rather disappointed in Sheehan's lack of deep ball accuracy when we do actually attempt to go deep. The one real deep ball he threw , he threw an INT. Beam looked very good at the deep ball on his highlight vid. I'd like to see if he's for real at all. I can't see us holding on to Beam if he never gets to see the light of day here.

Sheehan hasn't been terrible but I just think he has looked rather blah this season and am wondering if has hit a plateau in his talent and ability. He doesn't seem to have made that extra jump in performance you would expect from a Jr. who has had a full season of starting. Then again maybe we need a few more games vs more non-BCS teams to see where he is.

Interesting re: use or "non-use" of Beam...I felt he should've been in the game during our last 2 series, if for no other reason than to get his feet wet, so to speak. The game was pretty much out of hand, and you could make a case that it'd be unfair to put him in then I guess...but, if you wind up losing your 1st string QB to injury late in the game (and Minny was coming HARD that last 4-5 min. or so), then what?

Talked to my Texas bro this morning (some of you may remember some of his famous exchanges re: Laura Hart a few yrs. ago)...He's a Cincy grad, said Cincy lost their starting QB for the SEASON as he was in the game late against Okla., also with the game out of hand.

The interception Tyler threw was as much the receivers fault as his. First of all, it was as good as a punt, but the receiver made little or no effort to come back and cahllenge for the ball. He was one on one and that is the RECEIVERS responsibility!

You beat me to it. I think Tyler underthrew it by 2 yards. It looked like they had to slow up, but not by too much, and the receiver never made any attempt at the ball. The defender had to leap to get it, but all the receiver had to do is play defense. As a receiver, you should always be taught that if a ball is thrown short, then you need to take the role of the defender. Offensive pass interference isn't called as often as it could be, so he could have gotten away with a little bit of a penalty.

What I can say about seeing both Beam and Tyler in practice ... yeah it is no doubt that Beam is better at the deep ball in practice, but Tyler is pretty good too. They both have the ability in practice, but for whatever reason Tyler just won't throw deep. I see no reason to believe that if Beam played, he would change and throw deep. The big difference was command of the offense - Sheehan just looked more in command of the offense in practice than Beam.

The offense thrives on shorter passes mixed together with medium ones. It'd be nice to see some deep balls in there too, but this isn't Madden. I think any talk of a QB change is premature.

Every offense needs the element of a deep ball to stretch the field. Pitt is a perfect example of this. We just loaded up the box because they couldn't complete a ball over 20 yards.

Our offense needs those safeties to stay back and not creep up, when the free safety can move down slants, screens, and 5 yard dump passes become much more difficult.

Putting in Beam won't solve anything. I thought Tyler had a very effective game, one of his best since being a starter. He managed the game well, and he made a lot of good passes in key situations. One thing that bugs me about Tyler though is that he needs to run it more, much like he did last year. It was frustrating seeing him have running space and he opting to pass.

I'm excited about Beam, but the time for him to play isn't right now. If things get worse the next few weeks? Then yes.

Nope, he completed the first 4 and started 9 of 10 before two straight incompletions for a 9 of 12 start.

Tyler was fine and the defense was fine. Geter needs to be on the bench if he can't hold onto the ball.

Yeah, Bullock not playing is a bad idea...the kid played such a great game last week and I don't believe he put the ball on the turf at any point. He needs to be the starter from here on out...it's his job to lose.

I think some of you misinterpreted what I was saying...I'm not advocating starting Beam ahead of Sheehan...only observed that, when the game was pretty much out of hand in the last 6-8 min. or so, that it wouldn't have been bad to give Beam some reps, especially in front of a large crowd (at least what was remaining of that crowd). As I mentioned, Cincy LOST their starting QB late in the OK. game to a broken leg..because he was still in the game. Wouldn't have hurt to help Andrew get his feet wet a bit. Might come in handy in next few weeks when he might be needed for sure.

61, i can't agree more. In no way should we bench Tyler. He had a great season last year, and there's no reason to think he took any steps backwards. But i agree with playing Beam when the game was outta hand. Get him used to the speed of 1A (or whatever they're calling it now a days). We saw this with Omar when he went down, no QB was ready (i understand the guys behind him were very young) but now we have a player ready to step in if something were to happen, why not give him a series when the game is outta hand?

Why wait till a game is out of hand. Frankly I don't see too many of those typ of games on our schedule this year with our inconsistent play. Why not just give Beam a few series in the 2nd qtr and maybe a few in the 3rd to give him full game speed experience. No , I don't believe Tyler needs to be benched either just that Beam DOES need to get game time experience so that he's not a deer in headlights should Tyler go down (God forbid) and he's thrown out there with none at all.

FB,
For once I understand where you're coming from...but putting him at an earlier stage MIGHT give people the idea that things were Sheehan's fault. Don't need a QB controversy after just 2 games into the season. I just feel that Beam could've been given some time...and the game was still going on pretty much at speed in latter stages of 4th Qtr. Just look at the Minny rush in our last 2 series or so, when they sensed the game was in hand...they didn't let up, that's for sure!
