4th and 4 Minnesota - 4th Quarter

Did anyone watch the replay of this "catch"? I slow motioned that play several times and it sure looks like the ball was dropped.
And when did the replay officials get the memo not to initiate their own reviews anymore? It seemed like they used to review everything!
Also, on that run by AT to the corner the play before he scored, doesn't the plane of the goal line run past the sidelines so as long as you don't touch the out of bounds line with the ball or your body, can't you jump out of bounds across the goal line for a TD?
But in fairness, the refs did get the second Geter lost fumble call correct. I thought it was a bad call at the game.

Pretty sure the NFL changed that rule. Not sure about the NCAA.

if the runner is airborn, the ball cannot leave the sideline prior to breaking the plane. if so, he is out of bounds at that spot, the goal line extends when the runner is on the ground.

Don't the refs only do reviews inside 2 minutes?

I believe inside 2 minutes, the only people who CAN do reviews is the refs. Otherwise, I think anybody can. Although, I may be wrong.

Every play is reviewed.

Tom,
That was Geter's 3rd fumble of the game...and at the time I thought it was a horrible call. But watching the game on tape, it was a fumble and the refs were correct. Remember, Willie coughed it up in the first half as well but the ball bounced right back into his hands.

Actually I was referring to his first LOST fumble. He recovered the fumble in the first half. It was the play when he was basically sitting down when the ball appeared to come out but after watching it again at home, he did clearly lose it before being down.
Anyway, did you get a chance to slow motion the 4th and 4 play in question? The receiver did not have control of the ball up in the air and then cradled it underneath him when he hit the ground. It sure looked like a bad call to me. We were only down 21-17 at this point and they ended up scoring on that drive.

Yea, my dad texted me after the catch and said it was a bad call.
Is anyone else curious why Sheehan sneaked it on 3rd and 4?

If it's the play I remember, I don't think it was really 3rd and 4. There was one play that showed a 3rd and 4 (or maybe 2) and we ran a sneak, which seemed odd until you looked at the sticks and saw it was more like 3rd and a half. Though I was at the opposite corner of the field from that one, so maybe it was the beer talking.

It was third and a long 1 (maybe 2) and it was the play on our last drive of the first half right before a receiver made a great catch on an even dumber 4th down call. And yes, I was screaming at the foolishness of both calls at the time. We got very lucky to get a field goal out of that.
Well, at least we have things to work on this week!

Ahh...ok. Yeah, that one where he appeared down for a couple seconds, he actually did lose the ball.
I'll take another look at that 4th and 4 play...it was a knife in the heart.

Just curious, how did the stadium appear on tv?
Have to imagine the sound and sights were the best since the ESPN GAMEDAY game. All that orange looked good and people seemed to be cheering a lot.

The goal line does not extend out of bounds. Once the ball has completely crossed the sideline it is out at that spot. The body can be airborne out of bounds, but if the ball has not gone across the sideline it can break the plane of the goal line. That is why you will see players try to reach for the pylons.

Watching the game on tape, it was awesome! Loud, tons of orange and packed...the way it should be for every game.
