Non-Football things that frustrate me on gameday...

I noticed a few things yesterday that I wanted to get off my chest.

For starters, as we've discussed many times, the PA announcer sucks. He cannot even properly pronounce the names of our own players...god only knows how wrong he is on the opposing players.

I have no problem with firing a cannon after every score, but they should be doing it immediately after the score. Firing that cannon off during the kickoff is low rent. Does it effect the plays? Probably not, but it has no business happening anyways...pretty sure it'd be against NCAA regulations as well.

I think somebody mentioned it in another thread, but the band should not be playing during plays either. It's even more noticeable when it's OUR team with the ball. Sweet Caroline sucks anyways, you don't have to finish the song during a play.

And lastly...ditch the damn wave band. It hasn't been cool in like 20 years at least, and is probably among the most annoying things at any sporting event.

The band should play as loud as it can when we're on defense. On offense, no.

Remember band member. Football games are about football. 20,000 people do not show up to hear you play Sweet Caroline or the A-Team theme song. You are an accessory to the FOOTBALL game just like popcorn, the scoreboard, flush toilets, and the cannons they shoot t-shirts out of. You should only play anything when BG is on defense. Remember, this is Bowling Green. Please put aside the band ego and NEVER play when BG has the ball especially when the QB is 40 yards away coming towards you trying to call s snap count and you must finish the American classic "Sweet Caroline". I think we should pull a Wisconsin and suspend both our band and PA announcer. Oh and suspending the coaching staff might not be a bad idea either.

So in response, please tell your band mates to get over themselves.

Thanks

"Old people who keep asking people to sit down so they can see ......" What hell's wrong with that??? It's those "old" people who buy the tickets and keep you in business. Macman. If you want to be a kid, go to the student section and stand for 3 hours and behave like a nut! I stopped going to the basketball games because of the rudness of the student body and the fact that they didn't mind standing in front of people -- blocking their view. I'm 76 years old and I have the right to go to a stadium watch a football/basketball game without all the frustration that evolves from an obnxious, rude student body. --- Your comment was offensive Macman, grossly disrespectful!!!! And I think you own an apology to the thousands of "old" people who attend the games and BG and k eep you business.

Hah, you can tell the band to do that yourself. I graduated in 2004. My point is... we lost the game... it sucked. I was there as many others were. If you want to be negative and complain about every little thing that happens during the game... go ahead. The band will stop playing on offensive plays when the athletic department decides to ask for them to quit. The band is a non-factor on offensive drive. I can guarantee that the Boise State game was plenty loud and BG only had seven penalties for 55 yards.

Whoah .. take a chill pill man. Yes, the band is just part of the experience, but to say only play on defense or to suggest suspending the band is to really turn your back on one of BG's greatest traditions. You'll have a hard time finding a MAC band as good as BG - hell, there are few Big 10 bands that are as good on a consistent basis. Yes, the band needs to use discretion on when to play and needs to follow NCAA rules, which normally they do. Sure it got a little out of hand because the alumni are back, so just wait until next game and it will be back to normal. But you would rather not have the band play something to cheer on the team when they get a first down? Seriously? Next time you're at a BG football game, see what kind of impact you think the band has, then think about your comments again.

Why should Sheehan have to even think about the band playing while he is on the field? That was such a dumb post on so many levels. Some people just don't get it, why is BG ok with Brandon? Because some people are ok with mediocrity. This whole theory that the game is for the band also is BS. I hate to use tOSU as an example but......they love their band more than any other team in the country; but, if they were playing Hang On Sloopy while Pryor was trying to call an audible I bet their fans would be pissed off.

As for the AD needing to tell the band they shouldn't have to. It's a football game not a band competition.

The few of you who have responded to this and hate the fact that the FMB played a couple times longer than we should have represent a very small minority. As far as recommending suspending the FMB...seriously?!? Grow a pair and realize that the game was closer than you care to realize and it wasn't the band's fault the team lost. Telling the band that it shouldn't be playing at all when BG has the ball is like telling the crowd that it needs to be completely silent at all times when BG has the ball. It's ridiculous. Besides, I'm almost certain that the majority of the football team would fight against statements like that. They enjoy having the FMB there. If you don't like a Big Game atmosphere then go elsewhere. Realize that yeah, the game sucked because we lost. But seriously think about this...would you be complaining about the FMB had we won? I highly doubt it.

Where did anyone state that the band was intended to be the focus of attention? The band is there to support the team and to add to the atmosphere. They know that, and I haven't seen anyone tied to the program who has stated otherwise.

Over the years, the band has made an effort to do things to NOT get in the way of the team. Shortening stand tunes like Ay-Zig that they use on first downs now, for example.

I was there with the alumni band and can assure you, the student drum majors were trying their best to watch the game, direct the band, and to find that balance between playing enough and not playing after the snap. Did they make some mistakes? They sure did. It happens. I'm sure it doesn't happen as much when they are not trying to play so much because the alumni are there.
I'm not a fan of the Sweet Caroline deal either. If they continue to do it, I think they should fade it out when the team comes to the line and be done with it. Some of the points, such as that one, are valid. But the attitude and the way a couple of you are trying to condemn the band just comes across as bitterness over a bad loss where you're looking for something to bitch about.

Yeah, I'm about done with this thread. I had to delete a few pissed off posts already. It pretty rough feeling hyped about having season tickets when you realize who you are cheering with.
