The view from Sec. 13

Post by hammb »

Well guys another day another home loss. I wish I could say it pissed me off, but sadly I'm pretty apathetic about this team anymore. Thanks Gregg, you've made attending BG games almost feel like a chore rather than an enjoyable experience. Thankfully breakfast was good, and we had a great time before and after the game with Freak, Metz, BGFan, Falcon Fanatic, and the rest of the crew.

Anyways, on to the game here are my observations of the day, for what they're worth.

~ Playcalling was horrendous. Sheehan is at QB? They're throwing. Turner/Barnes? It's a run. I think Sheehan had a couple of keepers and handed the ball off about 4-5 times the entire game. Other than that it was pretty obvious when they were going to run/pass. If we can tell this in the stands, lord knows the opposition does.

~ 3rd and short? WOW. I have never seen worse playcalling on 3rd & 1 in my life. Countless times we'd direct snap to Turner or Barnes (which if you read above virtually guarantees a keeper). Why, in god's name, do you ask a guy (not a true RB, mind you) to gain 7 yards with no lead blocker on 3rd & 1? Can somebody please tell me what makes our staff think this is a good idea? Then to mix it up, we put Sheehan back there and ran an end around to Turner? SERIOUSLY!? Put a man under center and push for the first down. It's not rocket science. Our 3rd & Short coordinator is clearly overthinking things by listening to the run coordinator with input from the direct snap coordinator. Pitiful.

~ Diryall Briggs. Best player on the field today. Absolutely abused the MU OL all day long. Was getting mugged on every play and the refs would not throw a flag. Diryall, let it end there my man. Instead he lost his cool, was barking at the refs the entire second half and got flagged for a couple PFs after he continued to lose his cool. You played a great game man, but we need you to keep your composure and be a leader out there.

~ Rest of defense, where are you? Memo: That QB wasn't very good, they might run the ball this play, the next play, and the play after that. How about you tackle the guy with the ball? Tough concept I know, but I would've thought we'd give it a try once or twice.

~ Tyler, Tyler, Tyler. I hate to single out individual players, and I'm sure he's doing his best, but he is just struggling out there. I don't know what the stats were, but I'm sure they look fine. Bottom line, though, is that he didn't do enough to help his team. Consistently had guys open downfield and instead throws 3 yard dumpoffs. This is not the playcalling folks, we have guys running deeper routes, and getting open. Tyler either does not see them or does not have the confidence to make these throws. When he does make the throw he is way late or inaccurate. That INT was a perfect playcall and great execution by the receivers...we had 2 WRs and one DB trying to get back in coverage. Unfortunately Tyler didn't make the throw until the DB had retreated back enough to make the play. Yeah, the guy made a great play, but a good quick read by Sheehan is 6 for BG. I'd really like to see Beam just for a change.

~ Discipline? We don't need no stinking discipline. I cannot ever remember a team losing it's cool so often and drawing so many personal fouls. Haven't looked at the stats, but it felt like we had 100-150 yards in penalties...inexcusable.

I really don't know what to think anymore. The games are not fun to watch because we play about as bland football as you can in the spread offense. We're flat out boring. It's compounded by a group that never seems to show up with fire and intensity. It begs the question if they don't care, why should we? I'll be at the remaining two home games to enjoy the tailgating and the company, but I really don't care about this team anymore. If they win, good for them, but if they lose so be it. We will never go anywhere under this coaching staff, and I'm afraid we're stuck with this staff for awhile yet.

I just don't see how we draw 10k for either of the remaining home games. Any of you that live 2+ hours away and still continue to watch this team? I give you my kudos, see me at the next game, I'll hook you up with a cold one, you deserve it. Thanks again Gregg-ster...you make it feel like a chore to attend football games that I once loved.

~ 3rd and short?
I can remember running QB keepers in the seventh grade. For some reason BGSU football thinks it is better to get a one yard out of the shotgun. That was fine when Harris was here. That was the last time it was fine.

Hammb -- couldn't have said it better myself. You are exactly right. Used to be fun to go to games. Today should've been great, but instead it felt like a chore.

This team shows zero desire to play football, which makes me have no desire to put in effort to root them on. I sit there wanting to take a nap, much like how most of our players appear. I used to get excited to watch BG football games. Now I get excited to see my friends and tailgate and dread having to watch our team waste its considerable talent.

I wish we had Stanford's season ticket policy.

Actually it very nearly IS Rocket science. That is almost exactly what we did on crucial third and ones today. Our QB would bull straight ahead for the first down on third and one without fail. The only difference is the inevitable motion penalty that made that third and one a third and 6. Now THAT'S Rocket science. GRRRRRR!

That's exactly where I'm at. The team just doesn't care. If I had anywhere near the measureable speed or strength to play on this team, I'd be honored to represent my university, and I would NEVER, EVER give up on a play or a game. Our players aren't just dissapointments on the field, they are far from model citizens off of it. I've given this team my support, I've given them every chance in the world over the last 4 years. In the time I've been at BG, Bowling Green is a whopping 9-10 in games played AT HOME!!!

Enough already. Like Hammb said, it's just a chore to watch this team anymore. I'm on my last leg as a fan of BG football.

Hammb, great points. One more thing to pile on the 3rd and 1 playcalling is that every time we run to the strong side. Miami and everyone in the building knows this. Miami blew up the strong side and stopped us five yards back on several occasions. The weak side was open everytime!! Maybe we could try this. I am sure that maybe three years from now, this wrinkle may be installed. Pathetic effort, discipline, playcalling, and execution. Coach, just remeber what coach Blackney did when he embarrased this fine program.

Enough said.[/quote]

As previously mentioned, lack of discipline. The same lack of discipline that was showed during the Miami team entrance in one of the worst displays of sportsmanship I have ever seen. Who allows this lack of discipline to happen? I'll let everyone else answer.

That's another thing that makes it so very tough to enjoy rooting for this team. Not only do they play uninspired crap football they are just plain hard to root for. We're a team rife with thugs, and it does NOT represent my alma mater the way I'd like them to. Off the field issues all off season, constant personal fouls and other penalties, the ridiculous lack of sportsmanship to opposing teams entering, etc.

This product on the field is tough to watch and it's a tough group of guys to really root for. This is NOT the team that I want representing my university. It's a shame what Gregg Brandon has done to this program...

I believe I'm going to start calling this team "Gregg Brandon's Program" instead of the BGSU Football Team.

I'm with you that it's just tough to root for BG football right now. It's not a "sky is falling" reaction. It's more of a desire to protect the good name of BGSU.

Hell, Ankney wasn't a good head coach but at least his teams won and lost with class. Blackney in the early 90's had good teams who also won and lost with class.
