I've noticed that we've had a lot of new members here...it's only a matter of time that our fan base increases regardless of the recent performance. Now if we can get the mid-west talent to gravitate to our University...we'd have a great combo for success.

Wrong. Keep losing keep losing fans.

I would say the new members who are people who have been lurking for awhile and now want to voice their opinions on how bad it's going.

Negative, I think over time we'll get viral and have new members that realize that our program is more than just football! We do have hockey, volleyball, softabll, baseball, basketball...I've just noticed that we have more fans in here than normal regardless of our dismal performance on the field.

Perhaps. But we need Football as an athletic program; Baseball and Volleyball aren't going to bring in any revenue. If the hockey team can return and Coach Orr continues to turn the hoops around...now were onto something.

I'm here because I'm an alumnus. That's the only reason.

Those who are not alumni can take the train. The program will only improve if the alumni are behind it. This is not a OSU.

I know what you mean but football is our bread and butter. Hockey is second, and I don't care what anyone says here, football will bring in the revenue to this University! Hockey can bring revenue, but not like football will! Basketball hasn't done anything at least in the years I attended the U. The closest we've come on getting any recog is football.

We need new leadership to turn this program around and from the looks of it, we're scared to talk of this. Brandon is ok, but that's it! Maybe we need to sacrifice some down years to deal with a new coach. Soon as he becomes successful (if he does), he'll end up ditching us anyhow.

I hope I'm wrong, but I seriously doubt that BGSU football is a proft-generator. This isn't to say, though, that there isn't a logical business case to be made for having a football team and throwing money down the black hole of collegiate football.

For small schools, it's easy to get alumni to feel connected to the university. Schools that have 2,000 annual enrollment have comparable little problem with alumni staying involved. For big schools, like BGSU, there are relatively few ways of increasing alumni participation outside of varsity athletics - particularly football (and basketball to a lesser extent).

Also, many incoming studenst feel that having big programs like football is part of the college experience and just like having a well-maintained campus green, nice residence halls, or a new student union - it's an important recruiting tool.

But when you look on its balance sheet, it isn't and never will be the kind of program that will be so profitable (like OSU, UF, USC, etc - all the perrinneal top 25) that it would fund the non-revenue generating programs. It's not a bake sale; it's more like a community event sponsored by a corporation - it generates good will among its consumer group at a fiscal loss for the corporation.

...so what was it when the women's basketball team was in the sweet 16 and was plastered all over the front page of ESPN.com and ESPN? Seems like some pretty good "recog" to me.

Women's hoops will never generate the kind of name appeal that football does.

Maybe, but their coach is worth every dime of his pay. The person he replaced was one of the cheapest hires I've seen at BGSU, and the results showed. She was over her head and not ready for prime-time. Kinda of like...

I really hope that's not true. Personally, I joined this board in my freshman year ('06) after lurking throughout another disappointing season, and team bashing was certainly not my motivation.
