Wonder what Coach Brandon would say about this

Post by Warthog »

Ball State, ranked in the top 15 in the country, playing on a cold Tuesday night in November, for a West division title and an undefeated season had an attendance of....

11,088.

Interesting.

I hope the MAC seriously looks at the end of the season schedule. I have a real strong feeling that attendance numbers are always down this holiday weekend with a major source of your fan base (students) going home for the holiday. I wonder if Ball State required their students to be out of the dorms yesterday?

We are planning on going to the Miami-Ohio game Friday (12:30 Kick-off) and I have very low expectations for fan turnout. Having been in Oxford during breaks - both as a student and later - I can assure you the place is a ghost town.

Obviously, they have more "true" fans.

Their fan support has been lacking most of the year.

A new record in student turnout, with 11,088. Total attendance of 23,861. I thought the crowd looked good on TV.

I must apologize. I mis-read the story. I thought it was saying 11,000 total. But it was 11,000 students. That's great.

"Coach Brady Hoke said the scene showed him how far the program has come in the six seasons he's been with the Cardinals.

"I thought about when we played Bowling Green [State University] my last game of my first year here," Hoke said. "There was about 2,000 people here."

Guess it just goes to show that if you actually win football games, the fans will show up.

GB is right...our fanbase is notoriously fickle and prone to packing it in at the first sign of trouble. However, his timing on broaching the subject was atrocious and his refusal to backtrack or make the slightest move towards a conciliatory gesture is completely inexcuseable.

THis team should be unbeaten in the MAC...they were ahead in the 4th qtr of every single MAC loss to date this year. They should be playing Ball State in a MACC with BCS implications...instead they're facinng a game with their arch rival with a .500 season on the line.

How is that the fan's fault?

We didn't throw enough seat cushions at the EMU game?

It is a simple solution. If the coach does his part, the fans will do theirs.
BG was not undefeated, Muncie is a much bigger town than BG, their game wasn't at 6pm, and it was on TV.
Some major differences there!!

And BSU fans actually had serious reasons to think their team wouldn't find another new and inventive way to screw-up a home game.

You can call BG fans fickle, but I think most folks knew what was on tap and passed. To say nothing of a lousy starting time which made it easy to pass on.

Well put, Flipper. This is exactly the way I feel about it.

That's one of the most incredible stats I've seen.

If Ryan hasn't written about that, he should make it the cornerstone of his season wrap-up.

Success brings support and filled stadiums. The thought that people will come out - no matter the quality of the product is ridiculous at any level.

From Lost Ballparks by Lawrence Ritter

Ebbets Field - 1957 - Last game played by Brooklyn Dodgers before moving to LA - 6,702. Capacity - 32,000

Griffith Field - Less than 1,500 watched the Twins beat the Senators in the last game before moving to DC Stadium. (1961)

League Park - Cleveland - 1946 Last major league game at the park (Tigers v Indians). 2,772. Capacity - 22,000

Polo Grounds - Last NY Giants game in 1957 - 11,606. Last Mets game in 1963 - 1,752. The place held 55,000.

I could go on....... The point being these are all professional major league teams.

FWIW - 10,454 showed up on Sept 28 1960 at Fenway to watch Ted Williams play his last game. The Red Sox were not contenders that year.

In 2000 (Blackney's swan song), we were tied or leading going into the 4th quarter in every MAC game but the last.
