No Kids Zone at BG-Buffalo Football Game This Friday

Due to the forecasted weather conditions (temperatures below 40), there will not be a Falcon Kids Zone at this Friday's November 21 home football game (BGSU vs. Buffalo...6pm Kickoff at The Doyt).

You can't deny that they 6pm kick-off time hurt the attendance, but BG really needs to do something to bring more students into the fold. The only game I can remember where student turnout was great, was the Gameday game. While it is impossible to bring game to campus every year, we need to do something to reclaim that magic again. If students come now they are more likely to come as alumni.

On another note I have an idea the MAC could use. Why not give some TV rights to Sportstime Ohio. This would allow MAC teams to play on Saturday, and we would not be at the whim of E(BCS)PN. I still say give them the opportunity to have first choice on our games, but STO is established, and could give us more coverage in Ohio and the Midwest.

I thought our student support was pretty darn good throughout most of '01-'04. I distinctly remember Urban mentioning that we averaged something like 7000 students a game his second year here ('02).

Since we've struggled student support has waned, but when we were winning it was pretty good, even outside of the GameDay game, IMO. For a university of ~20,000 students I'd say 7000 students per game is probably about the best you can hope for.

Can the students still just show their school id to get in? When I was in school, we went to every sporting event we could fit in. I don't understand it myself. The stadium is beautiful, in walking distance from campus, plenty of parking, and a great college football atmosphere.

If we could get around 7,000 students at each home game, that would be great.

If there were 7000 students there I would walk to a BG game from Charlotte. I was at many of those games in that time, and it was more like 3000-4000. BG needs to win yes, but we also need to have some tradition that is unique to our school, that students can say it is their own. For example Penn with the throwing of the toast. Maybe we could at the start of the fourth give all of our opponents the bird.

Umm... were you at the Minnesota game? We had to turn away 1000 students because no more would fit in the stands. There is student interest on this campus, but you have to win games (esp big games at home against opponents you should beat) to get them to keep coming. And yes, we should have been able to beat Minnesota. Or at least have been competitive.

Yes, there is student interest on campus, and the Minnesota game was the first mistake. Turning away 1000 students was stupid. I don't care how you get them in the stadium, just do it.
I can guarantee you that there were more than a few students who were turned away and made the decision right then that they weren't coming back for any other games.

SportsTime Ohio and ONN are two viable sources for MAC coverage that need to be explored.

You not only have to win, but you have to have players and coaching staff that get the student body excited, and no matter what you think of Coach Brandon's coaching, I don't thin he is the guy to "excite" the student body. In fact, it may be just the opposite, especially if you are only a .500 team.
