Basler Named MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week

Auburn, Mich., native earns the award for the first time in his career

Dec. 6, 2008

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University junior Cody Basler, has been named Mid-American Conference Male Scholar Athlete of the Week, announced by the league office on Friday (Dec. 5).

Basler, a member of the BGSU football team, led the Falcons with a career-high 11 tackles as the defense was dominant in a 38-10 road win over arch-rival Toledo. He had three solo tackles and eight assisted stops in the game, shattering his previous best of six tackles in a game. His total included one tackle for loss and 0.5 sacks. The BG defense allowed UT only 196 yards of total offense in the game.

The 28-point margin of victory was BG's largest in a road game in the Toledo series. BG shut out the Rockets in the first half, the fourth consecutive game the Falcons had blanked the opponent in the opening 30 minutes. The Falcons held the Rockets to an incredible -1 yards of total offense in the opening half en route to that 17-0 lead.

Basler currently maintains a 3.44 grade-point average, while majoring in exercise science.

The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.

Other Male Nominees:
Central Michigan: Vince DiDona (wrestling, Sr., 3.33, marketing, Cleveland, Ohio) went 3-1 as the Chippewas won three of their four matches at the Northeast Duals last weekend. DiDona's only loss was a 2-1 decision against Iowa's Phil Keddy, who was ranked No. 3 nationally. DiDona defeated opponents from Bucknell, American and Drexel to help CMU to wins in each of those three duals.

Eastern Michigan: Tyler Jones (football, wide receiver, Sr., 3.16, marketing, Belleville, Mich.) caught an EMU single-game record 23 passes for 170 yards to help lead EMU to a 56-52 upset win over a visiting Central Michigan University team on Friday, Nov. 28, at home in Rynearson Stadium. That 23 reception mark tied UNLV's Randy Gatewood for the FBS NCAA record. Gatewood caught his 23 passes against Idaho, Sept. 17, 1994.

Congrats Cody! Well done...
