Going for 2

Why in the world would any coach go for 2 before the second half of the 4th quarter?

Umm...I could probably list at least five circumstantial reasons for you if I felt like thinking at the moment.

May I ask what prompted you to ask this question? Perhaps I missed something, but this just seems like a pretty random inquiry.

His only TD puts his team up by four with a minute gone in the fourth. Unlikely they wil score in the rest of the fourth quarter. One point does them no good- FG by the other team won't catch them, TD by the other team puts them ahead anyway. Go for two.

Coaches have a card that lists potential situations and whether to go for two.

The NFL yesterday was the clincher...I have been upset at the supposed idiotic "card" that all coaches have for years, but the Missouri - Kansas game really hacked me off.

Coaches never think about the fact that they might have to protect a lead. Would you rather have a 3 point lead than a 2 pointer? 4 rather than 3?

When you go early, it's stupid.

If you actually have to carry around a card telling yourself when to go for two, and cannot figured it out in 5 seconds in your head, should you really be calling the shots anyway? 8-)

I read something a while ago that since the NFL PAT kick rate was somewhere around 98%, that the NFL should consider eliminating the one-point conversion and make going for two required.

How significantly would that change the game? Does it make the NFL more of a crapshoot than today or less so?

Was it the USFL or WFL that allowed seven points for a touchdown with a one-point conversion with no kicking?

If the NFL had a pair, they'd implement a change for preseason games to give it a test.

Never mind the elimination of the 1 point. Make the Drop Kick worth 3 in PAT. Make FGs made in excess of 50 yards worth 4.

In the NFL I would be in favor of making the XP automatic if they want it. Or they can give up the free point in favor of a 2 point conversion attempt. Basically just eliminate the stupid kicking. I think there have been 2 or 3 XP missed in the entire NFL all season long...I think 1 was blocked, and 1 the kicker fell on bad turf.

It would speed up the game a touch, and really not effect the game much more than a couple points a year throughout the NFL.

In college I would prefer to keep the XP as is though...it's still a crapshoot at the college level whether or not you've got a kicker that can consistently hit them.

It wouldn't speed up the game, just allow for another commerical to be run.
