Can someone explain this team me. The MAC has 5 teams going bowling, but the highest payout bowl game is going to a 6-6 Northern Illinois team. Here are the 5 bowl games and the payouts:

Motor City Bowl: Central Michigan 750,000

Internation Bowl: Buffalo 750,000 (Will that be paid in US or Canadian Money)

GMAC Bowl: Ball State 750,000

Texas Bowl: Western Michigan 500,000 (Taking the Big East $$)

Independance: Northern Illinois 1.1 million


On a different note. I heard where Notre Dame is playing in the Hawaii Bowl. That payput is $398,000. I heard on the radio that Notre Dame expenses will be 1.2 million for travel, hotel, meals, etc. They will be losing money


Just thought it was odd where our highest payout bowl is played by the weakest bowl team in our conference.

Oh, factoring in unsold ticket allotments, won't every MAC team in a bowl game lose money too?

What is the difference in payouts for OSU and Boise State......there is a lawsuit waiting to happen there.

You have to remember that the conference tie-ins for the Independence Bowl are the Big 12 and SEC, the game isn't gonna change their payout just because the conferences they have tie-ins with couldn't supply teams

Not really. The non BCS teams don't get that same payout if they make a BCS game. The money they do get is divided among all the other non BCS teams as well.

The best info I can find on the BCS payouts comes from back when the lawsuit was first settled. The non-BCS teams get 7.5% of the BCS revenue. If they get a team into the BCS bowl games they receive an additional 7.5% of the total revenue. Each additional nonBCS team that gets into BCS bowl games earns an additional 4.5% for the non-BCS schools.

After the money was divided among all other non-BCS conferences Boise & Hawaii each brought home about $4.5 million in payouts. The second team in would get about $3.1 million. On top of that the expenses for these games are way higher than many of the other bowl games. Hawaii's expenses were over $2 million. Boise's were about $1.5 million two years ago.

Yes, Boise lost some cash by not getting one of the big bowl payouts, but it's not nearly the figure that you would think. When you step back and look at these numbers it really makes you realize how badly we're currently getting screwed with the system like it is.

That wasn't my point. You would think a better school from our conference would get the higher paying bowl games. Thats the point I was trying to make. Every MAC school was notified yesterday of who was going where, with the exception of Buffalo, they wanted to go to Toronto. You think Northern could have went to the Texas Bowl and send a better WMU team to the Independance Bowl

You make it sound like these payouts are windfalls for the individual schools involved.

This isn't the case.

My best guess is that all MAC schools participating in bowl games will fork over their payouts -- less any unmet ticket sale guarantees -- to the conference for sharing with other conference members.

Before that revenue sharing takes place, schools participating in bowl games will be allotted a reasonable payment by the MAC to help cover travel costs.

If there is any money left over after covering ticket guarantees and helping with travel expenses, then this revenue would be shared among conference members, with the MAC retaining a share for itself.

But, honestly, the goal may be to just break even.

For a conference like the big 10.... when they have two BCS programs, schools like Northwestern and IU lick their chops at the extra gravy coming their way. Less their expenses... OSU's appearance in the BCS garners another 1.1-1.3M per school in the BIG 10.

Your right. I hate it when I hear "people" say that with the reduction of scholarships it has leveled the playing field between all conferences. That is crap, they never mention the money disparity.
