UT struggled to move the ball and score in Clawson’s one season as offensive coordinator. The Vols finished 115th out of 119 major NCAA Division I teams with 268.8 yards per game, and they were 110th with 17.3 points per game.

Tough crowd in here.
Can we at least wait until he loses a game to start knocking him?

Just quoting the article. He did well as a coach at Richmond.

Dave Clawson, Richmond's fourth-year head coach, has proven himself as a program builder after just eight years as a head coach.

Clawson, 40, guided the biggest two-year turnaround in Spider football's 124-year history in his first two seasons, going 3-8 in 2004 and 9-4 in 2005. The Spiders finished a storybook season in 2005 which included a six-win turnaround from 2004, an eight-game win streak and a nine-game win streak over I-AA opponents. Clawson helped the Spiders to their third Atlantic 10 Conference title in eight years and guided them into the NCAA I-AA Playoffs for the first time since the 2000 season.

Clawson, who was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year twice at Fordham, was awarded the 2005 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year in only his second year in the league. It marked his third Conference Coach of the Year honor in his first seven years as a head coach.

National honors came Clawson's way that same season as he garnered the National Coach of the Year award from I-AA.org. That award made Clawson a two-time national award honoree, earning it once at two different schools. He was awarded the Richmond Touchdown Club College Coach of the Year award over the likes of Virginia Tech's Frank Beamer and Virginia's Al Groh.

As the Clawson Era rolls into its fourth season, the Spiders continue to steamroll under his guidance. The offense has combined for 8,817 yards over the past two seasons, which is the most-ever in back-to-back seasons in Richmond football history.

Thats the first thing I thought of too. He does have MAC ties though, he was an assistant at Buffalo.

But as I read more, I'm liking the idea more and more

"Clawson describes his coaching style as one that utilizes the available talent to maximize success. His philosophy focuses on getting individual playmakers more touches rather than sticking to a rigidly-defined system. His offenses have displayed components of the Pro-Style, Spread and Power Running attacks. His influences included Hank Small whom he coached under at Lehigh University and numerous NFL teams including the New York Jets, New York Giants and others."

Anyone else think this sounds exciting?

Solid hire, I like his record at Richmond. I wouldn't read too much into this year at Tennessee. That team had so many problems, anyone would have failed. I think it might have been a reversal of Brandon with him too, solid head coach but not a good coordinator. I'm excited to see what he'll bring.

So he was let go on Dec 1st.... That was a quick hire. Did the front runner for the job lose it as soon as Dave Clawson's name came about?
