Is Six years Too Long?

Post by MacGuy »

I'm happy with the Clawson hire, but I really can't remember any first-time I-A coaches receiving a six-year contract (per Sentinel-Tribune).

We have very good talent returning next year and should hold on to most of the 2009 recruiting class. This is not a rebuilding project where the coach needs three years to turn the program around.

Just a few weeks ago Lane Kiffin, another first-time I-A head coach, signed a 6 year contract with the University of Tennessee.

Beckman's contract, for a first time head coach at any level, with the Rockets was for 5 years.

Regardless, it has been said many times over those contracts aren't worth the parchment paper they are printed on...

I think in two or three years, you will have your answer :)

I think it depends on how much the buyout is. I can see negotiating a sixth year if you also got a lower buy out. By the time it actually happens, he'll probably either be extended or gone.

Didn't Notre Dame sign Charlie Weiss to a 7 year contract right away with him having never been a head coach anywhere? I could be wrong, and I'm sure I'll hear it if I am, but I thought he signed a 7 year deal and then turned around and signed a 3 year extension right away.

If he goes .500 the next four years with some ugly loses at home to MAC bottom feeders, and questionable in-game decisions, and multiple off-field problems from players, yes...he'll be gone.

....and loses a ton of scholly's for bad APR numbers....and calls out the fans after blowing the whole season at home....and loses the respect of the locker room....and continually throws players under the bus while never taking responsibility for a poor performance,..etc. Let's not shortchange everything Cowboy's Dad accomplished here during his tenure.

Oh, and call out freshmen kickers for missing field goals in mud bowls and tell the media the QB is wrong when he suggests off the field problems are effecting on the field performance.

I believe those fall under the blanket of, "continually throws players under the bus while never taking responsibility for a poor performance," but I could be wrong :)

Seriously Brandon is gone. I'm tired of ripping on him, he was a bad head coach, but he's not our problem now. I don't see why cowboyjoe continues to defend him, but I've long ago given up on making sense of his insanity.

Clawson is our coach now, and I'm willing to bet we'll be much better off for it.

I think the "insanity" is that we are paying this "horrible" head coach for the next two years ($260,000) and can't even pay Clawson that much money for 1 year. ($200,000) Should never have given him a 3 year deal if he was that "horrible".
