Wonder what his assistants are doing?

WOW
This should end the debate on why Hoke would even consider this "lateral" move. He was pulling teeth to get upper $300s and heaven forbid office space at Ball State.

Say what you will about Brandon's record, but Hoke does not deserve this. He got fire in a bottle this year, and now he is cashing in.

Deserve is a poor word choice. Timing is everything. And I think the phrase you're looking for is "lighting in a bottle. I think fire in a bottle is a moltov cocktail.

A little perspective, please.
$3.5 million over 5 years is $700k. More than he's making as the head man at Balls Tate? Sure.
But if you factor in cost-of-living (San Diego vs. Muncie), I suspect you'll find that this is not a monster, lottery-like payday it may appear to be. I've seen a few people toss around comparisons for housing, etc. and it makes the salary increase appear, at best, incremental.
In San Diego State, he takes on a rather big project and, honestly, I don't understand why. He's already built a mid-major into a strong program with some national attention. He should have been able to make the leap to a much better spot.
Of course, I can't help making the parallels between him and Denny Stolz - both coming off undefeated regular seasons, utterly screwing his team before a bowl game. I just wonder if Hoke's career will die in San Diego like Stolz's did.

My dad is actually friends with Brady Hoke's father (Mr. Hoke was the former principal at my high school), and there are several different reasons that he has for heading out there. He has former experience in recruiting the southern Cal area and knows a lot of the areas and high schools, but he wasn't really able to use that at Ball State. Also, if he is able to reach success at that school there are several Pac-10 schools that he would have a better opportunity of becoming coach at. Other things that went on with the front office at Ball State also contributed to this move, but overall I don't blame him for this move at all...San Diego is beautiful.

Or possibly "lightning". "Lighting in a bottle" is one of those cutesy things you get at T-shirt shops at Virginia Beach.

Thats what got me. If he was so loyal to BSU like we heard wouldn't he at least want to be a part of the bowl game??

I'll tell you why. Because he knows he hasn't built a damn thing at Ball State and his golden goose is going into the NFL draft.
Good for him to jump at the opportunity to better himself. I don't think he's a great head coach at all, but he knows this is likely his one shot to get a better gig.

Sounds like Denny Stolz, all right.

Absolutely. My sister lives in La Jolla, and she pays $1450 a month for a one bedroom efficiency apartment. 700k is a lot of scratch, but he won't be living like a king out there for that.
Still a good move for him.

A salary of $700,000 in San Diego, California could decrease to $331,587 in Muncie, Indiana.
