The last offensive assistant from Notre Dame to coach in the MAC turned out to be pretty good.

Hopefully he doesn't get things heading in the right direction, sings Miami's praises and commits to "finishing the job" then leaves the next week. That song wasn't very good the first or second time it was played.

Wouldn't blame him if he did. That's the way the game works...especially when you're a mid-major program. Get over it and enjoy the fact he set us up for at least a good 10-year stretch of competitive football at BG. Its a shame Brandon couldn't keep the momentum. Hopefully Clawson does. You can't over estimate the contribution Urban had on this program.

I agree. Anyone still sour that the best coach in college football, and he is the best coach in college football, left BG at exactly the right time and hasn't missed a beat since, is delusional.

I'm not upset that Meyer left, but how he left.

You don't bring in recruits on Saturday knowing you're getting on an airplane on Sunday to accept a job elsewhere.

It was bushleague.

Bulls&it! What do you want him to do, not bring them in and not get a chance to have them see the campus and make an impression on them? I give him credit for recruiting for BG right up until the end. What did you want him to do, throw the towel in and hope the next coach comes in and salvages them?

You keep working hard at your current job until the inks dry on your next contract. That's the way these things are handled. The guy at Iowa State was recruting for the Cyclones right up until he took the Auburn job. Do you think Turner Gill stopped recruiting at Buffalo because he was interviewing with Auburn and had Charles Barkley lobbying for him to get the job?

Urban handled himself with class all through his tenure with BG...even his departure.

I think you'll find yourself in the minority there. I hate that this topic keeps coming back up 6 years later, but since it has:

Dec. 6th 2002:

"We are nowhere near what we can do here. That's what's driving me right now," Meyer said Tuesday afternoon. "Everybody's worried about those other places; nothing's going on."

"I was contacted by one, but I'm not interested. I love it here. We have a lot of work to do. That's the bottom line."

Meyer said the talk of him leaving started when he took the Bowling Green job. Coaches from other schools tell recruits Meyer is not going to stay with the Falcons.

"With recruits, that's been for two years, even before we won," he said. "(They say) "that guy's not going to be there very long"; that's silly ... The future is fantastic here ... I'm proud to be the football coach here.

"Once they get to know me, know my family, know how important it is to have continuity, my kids going to school somewhere."

What was he supposed to say in that situation?

"I'm thinking of leaving for a higher paying job, but if I don't get it, I'm still happy to be here even though I'd rather be somewhere else."

He couldn't have said something like that. People say they just wanted him to be honest, but in reality, if he was honest it would've freaked everyone out.

Unfortunately in situations like that, coaches have no choice but to lie. What if he hadn't gotten the job at Utah? It would've been hard for him to come back to BG for a third season if he hadn't made the comments he made regarding the speculation of him leaving. Urban didn't do anything unethical. It's all ancient history now, so it's about time everyone either realized Urban Meyer had no choice but to handle it like he did, or just get over it.

In any other walk of life, if you're able to do the same job for a lot more money for someone else, anyone would agree you'd be crazy not to take it. But in sports for some reason, sometimes that simple reasoning dosen't seem to apply.

I'm glad he was here as long as he was. I still pull for him to do well. I think he's a great and classy coach, but could have handled the way he left better. I agree he was in a tough spot.
I think this thread is the first I've ever responded to this issue and am sorry I let it get to me this time. I blame eggnog...just because.

For the love of Doyt Perry, LET IT GO. I was po'ed when he left but man, that was SIX years ago. It happens in this business called college football all the time. It just stung badly cuz Urban had turned the program around.

Some folks here, IMO, seem to beat another dead horse about how Brandon "failed to keep the momentum going" or "didn't get the job done". I will agree in 3 of the last 4 Brandon years, he didn't get it done. But he did bring success to the program in other years. If he had failed to keep the momentum going, we would have ended up with another Gary Blackney situation and 3-8 or 2-9 records. Brandon lost respect with the players and that was his nail in the coffin.

This program is stocked with talent and Coach Clawson isn't walking into a bare cupboard, in crappy facilities (Like when Urban arrived) and no Sebo Center. BG is a happening job offer these days. Coach Brandon, like him or not, still had a lot of success at BG...although it seems a few around here will never give him his due.

At any rate, I'm pumped to see what Coach Clawson will do...and wish Brandon luck at Virginia and hope Urban beats the snot outta OK to win another BCS title.

Florida coach Urban Meyer was among those who noticed that Saban took a job after telling South Florida reporters he would not.
"I learned my lesson at Bowling Green," Meyer said. "I was offered a job and I turned it down. I was all set. They went like this and stuck a microphone in my face and said, 'Are you going to take the job?' And I said, 'No. I'm not going to take the job.' And then a few days later I got the phone call from Utah. So everyone was all [ticked] and all that. What's the best way to handle it? Now that you're older? It's 'No comment.' That's always the best way to handle it. Because I heard coach Saban say there's no way he's going to be the coach at Alabama."
