Do football fans go to hockey games?

Post by Bleeding Orange »

I ask this question because I am curious to see if hockey is even on the radar of the people around here.

I realize that hockey is hard to understand for some people because of the speed at which it is played, but let me tell you, it is one of the most exciting sports that I have ever seen at the collegiate level (and yes, I would say more exciting than college football!).

I love going to Falcon football games, but I love even more going to Falcon hockey games. From the standpoint of the number of games most of you will argue this with me, but there is more at stake in hockey games than there is in football. In hockey a bounce one way or the other can determine the game, and even the rest of then season. You can't say that about football. Plus, if you are a hockey fan, you have more opportunities to cheer on the Falcons throughout the year (and believe me, it helps quite a bit with that 'football hangover' January through March!).

What I am saying is, if you don't go to the games -- GO! If your argument is that you don't understand the game, send me a PM and I'll go to a game or two with you and do my best to explain it (although I'm not an expert). Heck, I can't speak for her, but I bet Falcon Fanatic would be willing to do the same!

Bottom line is, we are a great hockey team this year. We are currently ranked 17th in the nation and moving up! Our best athletic tradition at BGSU is in hockey (argue that all you want, you'll LOSE!!!). Our hockey players represent BGSU just as do our football players. THEY DESERVE YOUR SUPPORT.

Supporting the student athletes aside, I believe you owe it to yourself to check out Falcon hockey this year. Even if for one game, you won't be dissappointed! Plus, you can check out arguably the best freshman in NCAA hockey this year in Jonathan Matsumoto. Watching that kid and realizing that he is only a freshman is unbelievable.

Please, let me or any other Falcon hockey fan know if you want any information! We'll be happy to have you at the BGSU Ice Arena!!!

Wow, Awesome post, B.O.!! I am speechless!! I would be happy to accompany ANY fan to a hockey game and explain things as they happen. I have done it several times!! This is a fun team to watch and we have more depth than we have had in YEARS!!! Come out to a game sometime!!! The next two home games are HUGE for all of us!!!

Hey Falconboy, why don't you come to a game with B.O. and me? We would MUCH rather educate you on the game than ostracize you!! :D

It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

I couldn't vote...There was no choice that described me. I really like hockey, but don't go too often.

This could be a fun winter accross the board. Dakich, Miller and Paluch have all put together exciting teams from the looks of things.

Too bad you have to spend soooooo much space trying to justify your sport. I don't understand hockey, and I understand soccer even less. If you haven't played the sport, if you can't project yourself into the play, if you don't really have a feel for what's going on, it can be very boring. Football is the greatest team sport ever created requiring 22 skilled positions all of which require some measureable degree of athleticism. It's also a coaches game, a chess-match, a game of great strategy (intellectualism) --- the coaches can win/lose a game in a flash with a wrong call/judgment. The athetes that play this game have to be superbly anaerobically/aerobically fit --- the throwing arm of some is involved, the footspeed of an olympic sprinter for others is involved, and others have to be massive body builders with phenominal physical strength. Vertical jumps are important, catching is important, peripheral vision is important, change of pace is crucial, and kicking at its best even gets into the act. Could you ask for more in a sport????? Most sports are pale by comparison. ---- Now, I'm not knocking hockey; you've got me interested, but don't down-play football; you don't have a leg to stand on. :( :( :(

Dr. Bucko-
I may be out of line, but I don't think they were trying to say that hockey is better than football.
Based upon your descriptions of the skills needed in football, you obviously know a thing or 2 about athletics. So, I think that you should be able to appreciate the abilities hockey players have, even if you "don't understand hockey".
Again, I may be off base here, but I didn't see the need to take that stance against them.

There's a difference in trying to justify a sport and trying to promote it. There's no reason to justify hockey in BG, the program has done that on it's own. The national championship banner in the ice arena says it all. The excitement over the 20th anniversary celebration last year, and the turnout at the banquet also says it all. Turn the program around (which is being done) and the arena will be packed. (I was impressed with the turnout this past weekend for the Miami series even with the students on break. It wasn't a huge crowd but they drew more than the basketball game!)

BG HOCKEY NEEDS NO JUSTIFICATION!!

As for understanding the game - it's a combination of basketball and soccer on ice. You have the five on five and the ball handling skills of basketball, and the goal tending of soccer. The hardest rules to figure out are the 2 line passes, offsides, and crease violations. Other than that it's learning to recognize what the penalties are (and when they should and shouldn't be called!).

People that say they don't understand hockey have always baffled me. I think its about the easiest sport to comprehend. The fouls are more obvious than in football or basketball. Understanding the intracacies is one thing, but the idea is really quite simple: put the puck in the net. There is no 2 line pass rule in college, so that's moot. The only confusion is that the puck must cross the blue line before the player. The rest is child's play.

However, I did not vote in this poll either. I love Hockey, and I love BG hockey, but when it comes to my sports buck, it is the odd man out. I don't miss a home football game, and rarely miss a home hoops game. I try to get to a few hockey games a year, but some weekends there's a hockey game on Friday, Hoops Saturday afternoon, then Hockey Saturday evening. That's just too much for me. I will say to anyone who has written hockey off this team is very exciting, and Paluch is bringing us back to prominence.

I didn't mean to confuse on the 2 line pass.....it's allowed in college hockey (and has been tossed around as being allowed in the NHL to improve the flow of the game). I inadvertantly left out the fact that it wasn't allowed in the NHL if anyone was trying to compare the two.

I love watching college hockey. I just can't make more than 4 or 5 games a year. In the MAC, BG travels to Kent, Akron and places near me. Hockey doesn't. But it isn't their fault.

It really is great to watch and I was fortuante to have been there form 86-90. It was awesome and the team is going back to the top.

Will catch the last period, or maybe even the last half of the 2nd Sat after the football banquet. BEAT MSU!

Then Michigan on 12/11...this is way exciting. And the long time fans htat have weathered the bad times DESERVE all the positive news nowadays. We are BG....Hockey should be huge!

GO HOCKEY

BTW, I won't argue between football and hockey as to which means more in BG. Who cares? I love them both and all the other sports too! Both football and hockey have great traditions and success...and some bad times as well.

Yes you can say the same thing about football, and you have less games to make up for a loss. I don't really get that statement.

Does all this really matter? The point of the post is/was to let the football (only) guys know there's an additional sport at BG that is VERY deserving of their attendance. Yes, hockey can be confusing if you don't understand, but just ask the guys around you, if they are into BG Hockey (or hockey in general), they'll gladly explain to you that the puck must proceed the player. And no, every opponent does not suck!

So, come on out (the next two saturdays if you're in for a good game/atmosphere) to a game. The next 2 saturdays hockey plays MSU and the weasles.

Go Falcons!
