Geter returning punts. Phillips is our kicker. Anything else jump out?

We have a new offensive postion listed on the chart..."FB"...what the hell is that?

We also have 3 true freshmen on the defensive 2 deep.....good to see Brandon Jackson listed as a starter at DE. He was a really high profile recruit a few years back and he seemed to get buried flipping twixt LB and DE. I hope he gets a shot to fulfill all that promise as a SR.

Couple things:

In the 2 deep in the front 7:
Fr: 3
So: 2
Jr: 4
Sr: 5

We're not that young there, are we? 9 / 14 Jr or Sr, so that is those extra years of lifting and conditioning to match up with big experienced o lines and power running backs. Also, Brandon Jackson, Nick Torresso, Andrew Johnson, Angelo Magnone, Cody Basler, and Jerett Sanderson all got significant playing time last year with Sanderson being a full-time starter. Doesn't sound too bad. Having Jones as a true frosh in the 2 deep is definitely interesting. I hope he's ready because we need some depth at D line.

I also find the TB and FB interesting. So Bullock will be making a transition into more of a fullback. I still bet he'll see plenty of handoffs, just more blocking than he's used to doing. And where does that leave Lewis Parks? Is he transitioning to TE, back to LB, or taking a redshirt? Also interesting is that Pettigrew is right there, faster than anticipated. He must have really impressed in camp.

I was quite pleased actually that we put Bullock and Geter both in the starting rotation. These guys both did an excellent job running the ball, and even though one is a FB and the other TB, I see it as a dual threat in the backfield. Geter is explosive, and Bullock has the size and power, but enough speed to play a power TB. I'm definitely looking forward to the running game this year.

I'd like to see Sheehan in the shotgun with Geter on one side and Bullock on the left. They could split out in motion or stay there till the ball is snapped...

Not to bring up flamebait, but didn't Brandon work that formation at one point - I think it was with Pope & Lane. Ponies, or Pistol or something was the name, IIRC.

Anyway, I'm a big fan of having a FB, although Bullock is not the prototypical college FB. Having a guy like Geter makes it easy to go three-wide, since he'd be a natural in the slot. Certainly plenty for the defense to think about.

As for the two-deep ... seems like we're young on the second-string O-line, too. But, overall, it looks very encouraging.

What jumped out at me was when I found the career leaders list.

Right now, Sheehan is the career leader in completion percentage, just ahead of Jacobs and McClure. If he is able to stay healthy, it seems almost inevitable that he will finish second in career passing yards. That kind of suprises me, but still pretty impressive. If he matches last year's 20 TDs, he will tie McClure for career passing TDs. Again, pretty impressive.

Then there's FredEx. He enters the season at #10 on the all-time reception list. If he manages more than 40 catches, he moves up to number 4, just ahead of a guy named Szlachcic.

And Bullock is at #19 on the career rushing list ... Anthony Turner is at #15(!). But CB only needs a modest year (say, 500 yards) to vault himself much closer to the top 10.

Agree there, Flip. Would be great to see him have a BiG year.

Pettigrew is the real deal...he played HS ball about 15-20 minutes from Green and this kid can flat out play.

Looking at our 3 deep at tailback, and how Bullock has moved to fullback, I think it's pretty clear the type of tailback that Clawson favors. Not that it's really a surprise from the head coach that groomed Brian Westbrook.

He wants a smaller, fast, and shifty back that can probably contribute in the passing game as well. Personally, I LOVE that philosophy in the college game. Speed kills, so put as much of it on the field as you can. Over the years we have not generally stuck to that sort of tailback philosophy, so I'm anxious to watch it play out.

DC may prefer small, fast, and shifty backs, but he'll play who he thinks is the best player. At Fordham his top back was Kirwin Watson, who won all sorts of I-AA and Patriot League awards, 5'9" around 200, but very quick. At Richmond, though, DC's bread-and-butter were Tim Hightower (AZ Cardinals) at 6' and 225 and Josh Vaughan at 5'11" and 225. I know DC inherited Hightower from the previous coach, but I think he recruited Vaughan. The other backs he recruited at UR who are now the top two backs are definitely small and fast in the 5'9" and 180 range.

That's a result of using the two-back set, I think. When you go one-back, you're almost always better off with an "all-around" back - one who's kinda fast, but can run with a little power, who can block just enough but catch a few passes. Having a one-dimensional back in that system will kill you. But when you go two-back, you fan forgive some shortcomings - if you have a TB that doesn't particularly block well, you just need a FB who can.

All I know is that if I NEVER see the shotgun formation with the running back standing beside the QB doing the foot pumping before the snap I will be as happy as a pig in slop. Nothing announced "WE'RE HANDING IT OFF TO THE RUNNING BACK" as much as that formation did under Brandon.

And if Geter is returning kicks he better learn fast how to hang on to the stupid ball!

Good to see Dunlap #2 on the depth chart at RB. Hope he does well as he looked good in the spring game. Also I think its good that Pettigrew is this high already--we may have a gem there.

I hope we have a good mix of run and pass because we have talent at both WR and RB.

I think we'll see a lot of freshmen have some impact this year and that's a great thing.

Who was redshirted for this year? Anyone have the list?

DC had a pure blocking FB, John Crone, at Richmond. The kid probably caught a dozen and carried it even less over the course of a couple of seasons, but he was a monster at opening holes for Hightower. It will be fun to see what Coach Clawson does at BG.
