Calling all Tailgaters!

Post by hammb »

My aunt works for the Sentinel Tribune. A couple times a year they publish a glossy magazine and part of that is a feature called "Cook's Corner". It's generally a group oriented theme (holiday dinner, birthday party, etc). The idea is that they'll get 4-5 recipes, each from different members of the group, and come together to eat. They publish the recipes, take photos of the food, and a few words from the cooks as to the origin/inspiration of the recipe, etc.

Anyhow, they are interested in putting together a tailgate themed article and would like to do it this week. In order to do it we'll need a few people willing to put together a dish. Obviously they want something that is going to photograph well, and it has to be something a little more noteworthy than burgers & brats. Ideally they'd like a few dishes that range from appetizers, main dishes, to desserts.

The real tricky part is going to be the fact that they cannot have a photographer out there for the entire day. So if we are willing to volunteer for something like this we'll have to pick a time (I'm thinking like 1, maybe) when we can all hope to have our food ready. Obviously it doesn't have to be perfectly coordinated, but it would be nice if it were close. Of course, this also means that we may have to concentrate on the cooking as much as the drinking ;)

So do we have any volunteers to do something like this? I think it could be fun. My cousin is volunteering one dish...she's going to make pizza bread...it's a family appetizer that we've eaten for years. It's like a calzone or stromboli, pizza toppings wrapped into dough and baked. I was thinking perhaps I'll make some grilled Macaroni & cheese.

Anybody else want in on the party? If you are willing to participate, they will need your complete recipe typed out and given to them on Saturday. Hope we get a few people willing to do this, it should be fun, and open us up to some great food!

Okay, just talked to her again.

Their photographer has a previous engagement at 1:00, so she was hoping that maybe would have food ready to shoot by 12:30 on Saturday.

We won't have a huge window for the photographer so if you're going to volunteer we'll need to have food that is ready to eat around then. Of course if you're making something at home and bringing it, that is perfectly acceptable as well!

What time is everyone showing up?

I had initially thought 11, but as the days go by, that seems a little late. :-D

I will save you some...it's pretty good stuff. It has peppers, onions, and corn in it, along with standard macaroni & cheese fixings :) Then finishing it on the grill instead of the oven gives it a nice smoky touch.

I plan to get there around 11ish, I think. I was thinking noon, but if I'm going to have mac & cheese done by 12:30 I will need to be there earlier. However, if we're going to be part of the article we need more people to volunteer.

Is nobody else out there willing to make a dish for this?

I can't make it early enough to help out. My pulled pork was outstanding last week and I have considered making Jambalaya this week, but the kids don't care for it.

I could make my habanero/lime cheesecake... just wasn't planning on being out there that early....

Okay, it sounds like having food ready by 12:30 is the thing that has people backing out. And I wasn't planning on getting out there that early either.

So with kickoff at 4:00 what time would you guys all like to try to eat? Is 2:00 too late? 1:30 maybe? I will talk to her and see if she can arrange a photographer for a later time. Let me know what time would work for ya'll and I'll talk to her to see if we can work something out.

I think 1:30-2:00 was more along the lines I was thinking. And I'm pretty sure Toddpav was serious that he could shoot the food. He's the guy that too the slideshow that's on the main page right now... mad skillz! ;-)

His photos are awesome. I'll give her a call tonight and suggest that if her photographers cannot do it at that time perhaps Todd would take the photos. With them going for a print magazine I don't know what issues they have with ownership and whatnot...really have no clue what it entails. 12:30 was earlier than I wanted to have food ready too...1:30 or 2 sounds much better to me!

I'll talk to her this evening and see if we can work something out. I do think it'd be a pretty cool thing to have featured :)

I would love to volunteer a dish. Finances really bogart my participation though. I'll be observing closely for sure though.

I'm thinking about getting out there a little early, setting up a bit, seeing some folks then wandering over to the Ice Arena for a little hockey and maybe hit the men's soccer game, as well. Free admission to the soccer game if you show your football ticket!
