Bowl Tie-ins

Post by SB-50 »

The Big Ten announced new bowl tie-ins starting next year. The Bowl, formerly known as the Motor City Bowl, will have (at best) the 8th selection from the Big Ten. Since the Big Ten struggles to provide 7 bowl eligible teams, Detroit will probably never see a Big Ten team after this year.

If the Big 10 is this bad in bowl games as of late, why do these bowls continue to invite them to show up? Unfortunately, the answer is probably the almighty $.

It's just like why the Big 10 keeps getting two, not one, BCS bowls each year. Do you actually think Illinois deserved a BCS bowl in 2007 or Ohio State a BCS bowl in 2008? No - there is a reason that the Big 10 has lost its last six BCS bowls, and most of them were in embarrassing fashion (Michigan vs USC, Ohio State vs Florida, Illinois vs USC, Ohio State vs LSU, ...). They bring so many fans and so much money, though, that sub par teams will continue to get into the highest level of competition.
