Freddie Versus Sharon, Sanders & Manger
Freddie Versus Sharon, Sanders & Manger
The numbers Freddie Barnes has put up this year speak for themselves…they are absolutely amazing. But as I think about all the receivers we’ve had at BG since Urban Meyer installed the spread offense here, I don’t think Freddie cracks the starting lineup.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Freddie and think he’s a hell of a warrior. But he’s not particularly fast. In fact it’s downright hard to watch him run sometimes with that hitch in his stride. And for as many catches as he’s made in his career, I still tend to remember the ones he didn’t make. Some of his drops have been when he’s wide open and during key moments of games.
At this point, I would still take Charles Sharon Steve Sanders and Cole Manger ahead of Freddie if I am picking an all decade team at BG. That was a very special group.
That team with those guys, Omar and PJ was my favorite offensive team. What they did to Wisconsin in the first half of that game in Madison was unbelievable.

Re: Freddie Versus Sharon, Sanders & Manger
I think your explanation speaks to how great fredward is. He has next to nothing around him and is producing like gangbusters. That team you described was stacked. To me, hands down, Freddie is the best.
Re: Freddie Versus Sharon, Sanders & Manger
Freddie does not have the hands and route running ability of Cole Magner.
He's not the deep threat that Charles Sharon was.
He's not as big and strong going up for the ball as Steve Sanders.
However, I think Freddie is probably the most COMPLETE WR of the bunch. Drops are overrated. The dude is having the ball chucked his way 20 times a game. He's going to drop some, it happens.
As to where he would fit on that team with those other 3 guys? That is tough because they each had defined roles, and fit them perfectly...better than Freddie would fit any of them. However, he's still a damn good player that would have seen the field. I do believe that I prefer Freddie in the "wildcat" scenario more than Magner who would have been the one of that group to get those plays.
Overall Freddie is a fantastic player and is having an unbelievable senior season.

Magner could really catch, but that Manger kid you talk of could really cradle that pigskin.

Lets imagine if Freddie had been a WR his whole football career and think about how scary he would be. Honestly, I dont think Freddie has reached his potential as a WR and I know his work ethic and the kid will only continue to get better which I think NFL scouts will take into account. With that said, I cant really say where he would rank among them...thats a hell of a lot of great players...

You cant forget PJ Pope. That kid was a terrific pass catcher out of the backfield. Maybe the most underated player of the decade was Anthony Turner. He was never used to his full potential, but it seemed like we won most of the games where he got a lot of touches.

When you have a team that the falcons did with sharon, sanders and Magner there is no doubt about having a great passing game. we had so much depth but they werent the workhorse Barnes is. For a guy who started out as a QB, the dude is just sick at his position. Granted we got some talented receivers besides Barnes but most of our offense is accumulated between Sheehan and Barnes. Another player I would like to bring up is Jason Rice. Last year he only played in a few games but from what I saw of him I was amazed and excited for what the future might bring with him. Some of the jukes he made and his raw speed was great, almost comparable with Jeter but I haven't seen him this year in fact I thought I saw him playing defense. Im not sure about that so don't quote me on that. I missed Barnes performance last week due to being out of state but I'm leaving for Muncie in the morning and I hope I can see that kind of performance out of Barnes this weekend. Hopefully Jeter can put up a big game as well.

I've seen Southside Johnny Juke many times. Even in the University Union in 1982.BGFootball wrote:I have never personally seen Jeter juke...come to think of it, I dont think I have ever seen a baseball player juke...LowryFalcon wrote:When you have a team that the falcons did with sharon, sanders and Magner there is no doubt about having a great passing game. we had so much depth but they werent the workhorse Barnes is. Geter had a pretty good game today, but I don't think he'll ever win as many World Series rings as Jeter.LowryFalcon wrote:When I was comparing to Jeter I meant the speed.

People never mention CMac or Hawk when they talk about our WR corps from the 2002-2005 years, but those two guys were important cogs in the offense. They weren't as flashy as the other three guys, but they made thier share of tough catches

Re: Freddie Versus Sharon, Sanders & Manger
You're right, those guys were tough, go-over-the-middle type of guys. They made a lot of big plays for those teams.Flipper wrote:People never mention CMac or Hawk when they talk about our WR corps from the 2002-2005 years, but those two guys were important cogs in the offense. Re: Freddie Versus Sharon, Sanders & Manger
Great point, Flip. We were stacked at WR a few years ago and with J5 or Omar at the controls and Pope and Lane in the backfield, it was very difficult to key on anyone.Flipper wrote:People never mention CMac or Hawk when they talk about our WR corps from the 2002-2005 years, but those two guys were important cogs in the offense. Freddie is amazing...just an amazing athlete. He may not be as pure a WR as some of the others but overall is something else.
