I Heart Coach Clawson - Part II

Post by Redwingtom »

Not only is he now 1-0 against the school up north, but he is also 1-0 against the team down south.

More importantly, he is a man of character and this reaffirms that we made the right hire.

Nevertheless, Page was clearly down and out as he exited the stadium, and with nobody else to console him, BGSU coach Dave Clawson jogged over to the demoralized rookie while his team celebrated at midfield with the Peace Pipe trophy.

Clawson put his arm around Page's shoulder and spent a few moments talking to the 18-year-old.

"I just told him I'm really impressed with him as a player," Clawson said. "I joked with him that if he could leave after one year and go to the NFL, I'd encourage him to do so. And I just said that I'm not looking forward to having to play against him for three more years."

A former player also told me after the game that he wishes he had gotten the chance to play for Coach Clawson.

It's worth every penny to keep him the hell away from our program.

Coach Clawson did an excellent job this first season. 7-5, 6-2 MAC...beating both rivals by double digits and keeping a season from slipping away at 1-4. We won games we could have easily lost (Kent and Buffalo) but lost some games we could have easily won. That's how it goes but this team was competitive in every game except Boise State and was one win away from the East title.

Mega Falcon Talons to the whole staff for this season and damn it's exciting to hear the bowl talk and what the future holds.

Best fire and hire in a long time. The team fights, keeps its collective head high, and doesn't look like they are coached by people with no grasp on reality.

Hope like heck the bowl game proves a good match, assuming they get one.

Is there a chance that he might be in line for the Va job?

This article lists Richmonds new coach as a possibility. I dont know much about him but it seems curious to me that he would be an option after only 1 year at Richmond. Lets hope not. I think its a great hire.

I think Clawson is here to stay for a while. He has a young family that is now getting into school. I don't think he wants to move his family anymore now that they are growing, in school, and making friends. They've moved two straight summers and Clawson is enough of a family man to not want to do that anymore.

Just my instinct and also some wishful thinking. :D

Having heard Clawson's press conference when he was hired, I'd be inclined to agree. He was very emotional and made it clear that so many moves in such a short time had been very hard on his family. Not saying that means they wouldn't be up for one more, but I think it's certainly in our favor.

One thing I think that Greg Christopher has done exceptionally well is managing human resources. As well as fundraising/development (good increase in giving for such a down economy). While I think he has some work do on the overall leadership/direction in the department, he sees to make good initial hires and fights to keep the good coaches, something that was absent in our previous AD.

I think you need to take the times into context for each AD. To me, Paul was brought in to balance the budget, and he did that very well. Again, as I see it, Greg has been brought in to build on that and increase giving. There are many things we need to do as a department, but cannot as long as the budget is a looming problem each and every year. Because of that, I will cut him some slack on the leadership aspect. I really like the "18 sports, 1 team" slogan. He brought that in and to me, that is the direction he wants the department to go.

Can't disagree with any of that falconjw, between Orr and Clawson (and now it appears Williams as well), Greg Christopher has done a very solid job in the hiring department. And the one established coach we have, Curt Miller, got a fat contract extension after he took the women's BB team farther than they ever had before. And the fact that we got bushels full of donations for the Stroh Center and are now going to have the Ice Arena redone, all in a down economy, that's pretty damn impressive.

What makes all of this even more impressive to me is that Bowling Green is not a school with a huge population surrounding it. Granted Toledo's metro area is not that far away, but with only 120k people in Wood County, it's naturally much more difficult to get donations and to get the alumni/community behind the school's athletic program than it is at say, Akron or Buffalo. It's always fascinated me that those schools (Toledo also) are never able to capitalize on the major population bases that surround their schools and be more dominant within the MAC.
