Latest Bowl Picture

I spent the morning looking at the bowl picture for BG.

Currently 64 of the 69 bowl bids have been spoken for through conference tie-ins and better records than ours (7-5).

That leaves 5 bids yet to be offered.

The bowls with holes because of not enough bowl-eligible teams from a conference tie-in include...

GMAC - No ACC #9 (Duke takes this by beating Wake Forest) (BG won't go here against MAC team)
Eagle Bank - (2 bids) Army not eligible (could if they upset Navy), No ACC #8 (Duke again possible)
Pizza - No Big Ten #7 (BG won't go here against MAC team)
New Mexico - Not enough Mountain West Conference eligible teams

BG and Northern Illinois currently are only 7-5 teams not holding a bid.

Other teams with chance for bid...

Marshall 6-5 (@UTEP)
Southern Methodist 6-5 (Tulane)
UCLA 6-5 (@USC)
Louisiana Monroe 6-5 (Middle Tenn St)
Louisiana Layette 6-5 (Troy)
Duke 5-6 (Wake Forest)
Connecticut 5-5 (Syracuse, South Florida)
Army 5-6 (Navy)

It looks Notre Dame goes regardles of what it does against USC. They are considered a Big East team when considering bowl elgibility according to ESPN.com. Only chance is if they turn down a lesser bowl and fire Weis.

We'll know more on our chances by the end of the day today.

I thought Duke was ineligible because they won't have six FBS wins even if they beat Wake Forest?

So pretty much what this means is that virtually all the 6-6 teams have bowl tie-ins, seeing as there were only 69 bowl eligible teams entering Friday's play, and only 1 as far as I know (Wyoming) won on Friday to get to 6 wins, thus taking that number to 70.

It seems implausible to me that we would be one of the 3-4 teams in the whole nation shut out, with 7 wins. Oh well, we'll just have to wait and see.

I found this site to be helpful. Hopefully BG can sneak in!

Oklahoma beating Oklahoma State should help our bowl possibilities. Barring a Nebraska upset over Texas in the Big 12 championship game, Boise State should get a BCS at-large bid. Currently the WAC has four 7+ win teams and only 3 tie-ins but the Broncos going to a BCS bowl would take any WAC teams out of the at-large pool.

Also the MAC has already secured a spot in the Eagle Bank Bowl so only one MAC team will be looking for an at-large bid.

Duke loses today so they are out no matter what.

UAB lost and they failed to qualify.

Marshall is down 20-14 to UTEP at the half.

So we need to root for Marshall to lose? I think I can do that. :-D

Marshall loses 52-21 to UTEP. They're behind us in pecking order.

The Thundering Terd certainly lived up to their name this week.

Marshall 21
UTEP 52

1:45 left, 4Q.

And in case if you were wondering, UTEP is 3-8.

How does Oklahoma beating Okla State help BGSU? Wouldn't it have been better for OU to end up 6-6 instead of 7-5?

How could there be 69 bowl bids? That makes no sense.

Because of that loss, OSU will probably be out of the BCS, meaning Boise State will almost certainly get in. That frees up a WAC bid, which will be filled by an at-large team.

The Big 12 has 8 bowl tie-ins and for those tie-ins a team only has to be 6-6 to be selected over a 7-5 team. Oklahoma was going to get one of those bid whether they were 7-5 or 6-6. Oklahoma State losing should put Boise State in the BCS and leave the 3 bowl tie-ins the WAC has for their other 3 bowl-eligible teams and they won't have to use an at-large bid. Pretty confusing I know.

Notre Dame and FSU only count as 1/2 a team each. Their defense never shows up to their games.

Duke loses to Wake Forest...Blue Demons not bowl eligible.
Marshall loses to UTEP...Herd is 6-6...behing BG in selection order.
