Potential Bowl Payout

With the MAC projecting 5 teams I figured I would calucate the payout per team. Not sure of the exact formula, but I know it is split among all MAC teams. I'm sure the league office gets a small portion of these payouts, does anyone know the split???

Pizza Bowl- 750,000
EagleBank- 1,000,000
Humanitarian 750,000
International 750,000
GMAC 750,000

4 million payout to the MAC, if split 13 equal ways would come out to approx $308,000. I don't even want to think about comparing that to the BCS conferences, especially Big Ten and SEC who have two teams in BCS bowls that payout 18,000,000 per team.

What's a little disheartening to me is that I've read that in recent years, MAC schools tend to lose a good bit of money by going bowling. It's good for the prestige but real bad for the finances. The student papers for both Ohio and NIU have run stories recently detailing how much money the school's lost by going bowling.

As I have understood this in the past, the PARTICIPATING teams take out their expenses,no small item when including travel, meals, lodging, for over 100 players, coaches, and auxiliary staff, not to mention if the band comes along.

THEN, whatever is "hopefully" left will be split among all teams and the conference.... You also have to "guarantee" the bowl people "x" number of tix will be sold....if not, the 750K will be reduced accordingly.. It's why, when I broke my ankle a few weeks before our last bowl appearance, I donated my unused tickets to be given out to underprivileged kids... that way,BG would still get credit for the sales, not that 2 tix would make a lot of difference.

The gist of this then, that your $318 K per team just doesn't hold true... One plus, I think, is that, when a "non- BS" conference team (Not a typo) makes a "major bowl", some of that money gets sent thru to all "non-BS" conferences... at least I think that's the way it works.

Here is a thought to protect bowl teams in the conference, let them keep enough money to pay their expenses and then divide it up amongst the conference.

I thought that was how it is done, but we lose the money due to not being able to sell our allotment of tickets.

No offense, but isn't that what I just said in the post above yours?

No big deal but in the end, no mac team will likely ever go to a bowl where the payout is large enough to make any sense in dividing up, so why not just change the rule so that schools that go to a bowl get all the dough to cover the costs, then keep any ballance.
At BGSU last bowl it cost $125k, to play that game, and that was a "good" bowl.

I think it would far better that since Ohio State is a state school that any money they earn in bowls be divided up among all State funded Universities equally prior to any big tleven splits which OSU would be responsible for out of their share...lol....(sure would piss them off)

I still say that in the current economic state the University is in, its a bad idea.

if i'm not mistaken, i think you'll also get a payout from having Boise/TCU in a BCS bowl.

all non-AQ teams get a percentage of the loot.

Apparently the President is stepping in to help out the situation. I just received this email:

December 11 , 2009

Dear Faculty and Staff,

This has been a great week for Falcon football. On Sunday, our football team received an invitation to play in the Roady's Humanitarian Bowl. Last night, wide receiver Freddie Barnes was featured on the 2009 College Football Awards on national television as a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award, presented annually to the nation's top receiver. While another athlete won, it is a tremendous honor for him to be one of the three finalists -- and a first for a BGSU player.

I hope you'll join me in congratulating Freddie, first-year Coach Dave Clawson and his staff, and the entire football team on an outstanding season. It's a great honor to be one of only 68 teams in Division I football to be invited to play in a bowl game.

It's also been a good year for the Mid-American Conference. Five MAC teams were selected for bowl games, raising the national profile of the conference and all its 13 member universities.

The Humanitarian Bowl is a tremendous opportunity for our team and a great way for our seniors to close out their BGSU careers. The benefits to the University are significant. Based on television ratings from previous broadcasts, about 3 million people will tune in.

The game will help us increase awareness of the University among prospective students and parents and serves as a wonderful reminder to alumni across the country of their BGSU experience.

That said, we're mindful of the expense to participate in the bowl and are working to control costs, including reducing the number of staff attending and shortening the team's length of stay.

Fortunately, the payments we receive from the Humanitarian Bowl and from the MAC will cover the expenses for the team and the athletic department. While we won't make money, we expect to break even.

There will be some costs for the trip that will need to be covered outside of Athletic Department budgets. For example, I'll be using funds from my budget to send a contingent of about 60 members of the Falcon Marching Band. I am personally very disappointed that the entire band will not be able to go to Boise, but sending everyone would cost in excess of $250,000. We also had to make the same difficult decision about sending only some members of our spirit groups. These decisions were especially difficult because these students are excellent representatives of BGSU and passionate supporters of the team.

I've been very impressed by the leadership and maturity shown by the members of our marching band and spirit groups as we made decisions about what we could afford. I'm confident that these smaller contingents will make their peers here at home and the entire University community proud.

The BGSU Foundation will also be helping to defray some bowl-related expenses.

I hope you share my excitement about the game and will be cheering for our Falcons and Freddie Barnes as he tries to break the NCAA record for receptions.

Best Regards,

Carol Cartwright
President

I like how our administration is proactive and shows us some transparency to the cost of the University. With the documented job layoffs and hiring freeze the cost to go to a bowl is probably on alot of faculty and staff's minds. This is a very noticeable difference since she replaced Sidney.

On another note I notice Alabama cancelled classes, and the Athletic Department is seeing record revenues from this season. rich get richer.

Could it ever be possible to have an even payout to all teams that make a bowl???? Take all payouts and split 68 ways.... I know the BCS officials wouldn't allow it, but I think we could come up with a more suitable formula to even the playing field, instead of trying to squeeze out the non-BCS teams.
