Cold weather games

Post by MarkL »

Temperatures at kick off for BG and Idaho's games this year:

Idaho
NMSU: Not reported
Washington: 74
San Diego State: Indoors
Northern Illinois: 62
Colorado State: Indoors
San Jose State: 66
Hawaii: Indoors
Nevada: 65
L Tech: Indoors
Fresno State: Indoors
Boise State: 34
Utah State: Indoors

BG
Troy: 76
Mizzou: 79
Marshall: 77
Boise State: 67
Ohio: 57
Kent: 56
Ball State: 42
CMU: 46
Buffalo: 43
Miami: 51
Akron: 49
Toledo: 38

Idaho plays at home in the Kibbie Dome, so they don't go outside much. They have had one cold game all year, and that was vs Boise. In fact, that was their only game under 60 at kickoff. Meanwhile, 8 of our 12 games were 60 under kickoff. Their coldest game, Boise State, was four degrees colder than our coldest game, Toledo, but that game is their entire experience this year of cold weather.

Idaho's record in games under 60: 0-1. OK, so that was against Boise State, so I can't be TOO critical for that record, but I can point out that they are very inexperienced in playing in the cold this year.
BG's record in games under 60: 6-2.

Advantage in Boise in December with an average high of 37 and low of 24 - clearly BG.

With a high of 16 and a low of -1 in Moscow yesterday, I think our players will be plenty accustomed to the cold.

I'm more worried about my drinking hand falling off during the tailgate.

This risk is why I recommend drinking with the same hand you use to control the mouse ;)

We have an outdoor practice field right next to the dome. I'm sure our team will be practicing there for the next few weeks, and will be acclimated to the cold by the time the game rolls around.

just make sure to tell your players to dress warm for the game. otherwise, they'll turn blue and blend-in with the field and that would be horribly, horribly unfair.
