Good Sportrsmanship Personified!

From FootballScoop.com: Alabama: The university has canceled all classes from January 6-8 with the Tide playing in the BCS championship game. Gotta love that!

And then someone wonders why the math department is upset if a student-athlete has to miss a class if he or she is playing away from campus................

I want to see how the college presidents defend this as protecting academics. I can understand the athletes missing 3 days of classes, but for all of the students is a bit of a joke. It was last year when Meyer pulled his team from classes for an entire week to prepare for the game.

the first week of class is BS anyways, anyone who went to college can tell you that.
I like seeing the college allowing their students to support their team without penalty. I think the bigger issue is, why would they have school start so soon? What an awful winter break.
Talk to people that go to schools that play in championships. They tell you how no one is in class day of or day after championship games (referencing maryland in 02 bball and unc in 05 bball)

They don't cancel classes at UNC or Duke during NCAA Tourney. I just hate that they claim that bowls protect academics when a play-off would little effect on them. I know the first week is BS, but now the second week becomes BS. Look I am happy and in college I would have loved to be off to watch a game. Now as I am in grad school and a teacher I think it is another example of athletics being college's number 1 business.

C'mon people this is Alabama we're talking about here, not exactly a hotbed for quality education.

Alabama is a pretty good institution, it's ignorant to think otherwise. Didn't Davidson do something similar a few years back for the NCAA Tourny?

Well, all I know is, when I went to Alcala de Henares, Spain in 2008 through the academic year abroad program, we were there along with a group from the University of Alabama. Let's just say that their level of understanding, in both the 100/200 level class and the 300/400 level wasn't anywhere near ours. BG students were always answering the questions, giving the good oral presentations, and running most of the group projects.

Again, I was only there a semester, and the size of our group and there's was only about 40 students so maybe we just got a bad sample. But I somehow doubt it.
