All-BGSU Football Team 2000-2009

Post by transfer2BGSU »

Name your All-BGSU Football Team for the decade (must have played between 2000-2009 season).

No Brian McClure. No Gehad Youseff. No Phil Villapiano. No Rich Dackin. No Martin Bayless.

This should be interesting. :D

Considering every "all-time" team discussions end up as a 2003-2005 roster anyway, I don't know that it will be *that* interesting.

But can we have 9 WR's on the first team offense, please?

I'll do cowboyjoe's

"Brandon coaching Chis Bullock...that will beat any 22 guys you can come up with.

OK...for real...

On offense...Warren and Wendel are my tackles. I'm gonna cheat and put Lichtensteiger at OG along with Shane Steffy. Mruczkowski is at C. Harris at QB, PJ Pope at TB. Redd, Barnes, Partridge and Magner at WR.

TE and FB? what the hell are those?

WR is easily the strongest position with guys like Gerling, Sanders, Sharon and Hawk left off.

On defense...let's go with Diyral and Devon Parks at DE, Hicks and Thaler at DT. LB would be Dozier, Burkes, and Hewitt. CB are Patton and Newson and safeties are Mahone and Malone.

Nate Fry and Suisham are my kickers.

QB - Harris
TB - Pope
WR - Redd, Magner, Sharon, Barnes
FB (short yardage sub) - DiBacco - I know that we didn't use a FB/TE, but this guy was unstoppable in NCAA Football 2003 or 2004.
OL - I may have 3 tackles here, but........Wendel, Mazur, Lichtensteiger, Mruczkowski, and Nystrom

DE - Briggs and Parks - tough to leave Ryan Wingrove off, but these guys were freaks during their senior years.
DT - Thaler and Hicks
LB - Campbell, Chris Haneline, and Burkes
S - Carswell and Mahone
CB - Patton and Newson

P - Fry
K - Suisham

I'll take a stab at it. I'm not good with judging offensive linemen, so two of the slots are empty. I just remember a lot of good blocks by Markray. Lichtensteiger played guard before switching to center and was just as good there as center, so he gets the nod at OL instead of center because Mruzkowski was just too good.

QB Josh Harris
RB P.J. Pope
FB Pete Winovich
WR Freddie Barnes
WR Charles Sharon
TE Jimmy Scheidler
OL Pick your favorite
OL Pick your favorite
OL Kory Lichtensteiger
OL Derrick Markray
C Scott Mruczkowski
DEFENSE
DL Devon Parks
DL Brandon Hicks
DL Ryan Wingrove
DL Diyral Briggs
LB Chris Haneline
LB Mitch Hewitt
LB Khary Campbell
DB Antonio Smith
DB Keon Newson
DB P.J. Mahone
DB Jansenn Patten
SPECIAL TEAMS
K Shaun Suisham
P Pat Fleming
KR Roger Williams
PR Robert Redd

QB was a really tough pick. Really can't go wrong with Harris, Jacobs, or Sheehan. I picked Harris because he has the most high profile wins to his name and got the team the closest to a MAC title. WR was not as tough. I can't ignore the accomplishments of Robert Redd, Cornelius McGrady, James Hawkins, Cole Magner, Steve Sanders, and Corey Partridge, but Freddie Barnes and Charles Sharon have proven themselves to be elite among an extremely good group of receivers. KR was also tough. Roger Williams is quite good and has given the offense decent to excellent field position in his time here. I know this sounds a pit pessimistic, but I must wonder how much of his statistical dominance is because the defense has given up a lot of points, thus giving him more opportunities. He did have that great return against Tulsa, though, and quite a few good returns in 2007 and a career day against Miami that year. So I put him here, but as I recall, B.J. Lane was a heck of a talent at KR. I have to wonder if he were around during the time that Roger returned all of his kicks if B.J. would have done better than Roger.

Also hard to judge a lot of the defensive players. BG defensively was very good back in pre-2005 and especially good in 2001 and 2002. I'm not sure how much of that was the defenses were that good and how much was MAC offenses have gotten significantly better across the board since then, but I think it's a lot of both. I also didn't begin following BG football like it was my life until 2004, so any pre-2004 picks were difficult to judge.

Betcha Brandon recruited 90% of the players listed in the above posts...ah... and that "team of the decade" thread? How many years did Brandon coach in the decade? Hmmm.... It's ok Flipper you forgot this and Clawson doesn't even know this about Mr. Bullock. Maybe someone will tell him by the bowl game

I'll take that bet, because quite a few of those players are actually Meyer recruits. It looks like one or two are even Blackney recruits. Maybe Blackney was the coach we should have tried to keep.

Cowboyjoe, you sir are an moron. If you didnt notice, Brandon kept losing more and more as his coaching career went on. Like mmisbg said, most of Brandon's players were Meyer recruits or even Blackney's. Clawson will still need to prove himself and show that he can recruit but I think Clawson already shows more heart and soul out there on the field and thats the kind of coach we need.
