Most heartbreaking BG loss for me, even tops fat punter game

Post by BGSU33 »

What a heartbreaking & crushing loss....It's been what, about 15 years since the fat punter (BG/CMU) game? I think this one just topped that game in football for me. Down 28-14, storm back to take 42-35 lead with about :30 to go in a bowl game, then lose by one point with four second left....damn, damn, damn......I feel so bad for this team right now, especially the seniors.

Upon quick reflection, yeah. Although the fat punter game was for the MAC championship. So that stings a little more.....

Nah, Fat Punter game is the worst by far.

1994...BG hosts CMU...MAC title on the line and a trip to the Vegas Bowl as well (VEGAS baby!!). BG is ahead, CMU is punting from deep in their territory. For some reason...the CMU punter...a fat SOB who was built more like a sofa than a collegiate athlete...decides to take off running. Our guys had turned their backs on this treacherous bastard and re oblivious to his commie skullduggery. As a result, he sauntered into the end zone and destroyed our season, our team and quite possibly the career of one Gary Blackney.

This one pales in comparison to that game and it pales in comparison to the 1985 Cal Bowl. We were UNBEATEN and ranked in 1985. We rolled into Cali to take on Fresno..the same jerks that had beaten us in a fluke comeback in the 1982 Cal Bowl. But...we were done in by that traitorous rat Denny Stolz. He blew the team off during game week to do some job interviews. He got a fat deal from San Diego State and we got drilled like a Rachel Uchitel. God...I really dislike Denny Stolz. I have family from the Lansing area....it's quite possible that they hate him up there more than long time Falcons do, but I have a hrad time believing it.
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

It depends on how you define "heartbreaking." IIRC, we still had several minutes to get on the field and come back from the fat punter. Giving up 70 yards in 30 seconds after taking the lead on such an exciting play is definitely heartbreaking, but giving up an apparent MAC title on a fake punt is/was crushing.

I guess that's what we get for having a string of restaurants beyond the south endzone. If we made those apartments, I don't think the punter runs with quite as much determination toward the goal line.

In the pantheon of football disappointments, the 1986 California Raisin Bowl will forever be the number 1 disappointment for me...by a rather big distance. For background I was at every home game my Freshmen year at BG, I believe our first ever national ranking, and first national TV exposure on the still small ESPN cable channel.
In overall disappointments the shut-out to the 2000 Men's Basketball Tourney is number 1.

I would have to say one of the most heartbreaking games for me was the ut game in 2005. Win and we play for the title...goes into 2 OT's and Gradkowski hit that BiG TE...Hopkins or Jones? And they win 44-41. Losing like that and to those scumbag rockets at the same time was not fun.

Losing to Ohio State in 2003...we were reallllllllllllly close to pulling that one off. Would have been huge...

The 82 Cal Bowl was pretty bad, too. '94 CMU game.

Hopkins- we all knew it was going to him. As soon as Bruce threw it my buddy, a former Rocket o-lineman on our own California Bowl winner against San Jose State, shouted "Touchdown". He was right- always thought Hopkins might play pro some day but don't think he even got a free agent look.

I agree. That game, to me, was much worse than last night's heartbreaking loss. Losing, AT HOME to the rockets, was a VERY bitter pill to swallow!!!! VERY BITTER...and the horrible taste lasted waaaaaaaay, waaaaaaaaaaaay tooooooooo long.

It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

And I believe we gave up a huge lead in that game.

We also gave up a huge lead @Wisconsin, as I recall.

I agree, the Ohio State game in 2003 is a game I'll never forget. Took the National Champs to the wire. We were a dropped pass away from accomplishing the impossible.
