I have been following BG football and this board for a while. There seems to be a love affair with clawson and this years BG program. I want to give my honest opinion and some thoughts about Bg and the program.
1) Without Freddie Barnes and Tyler shehan this is a 2 or 3 win football team.. Ive watched many games and its freddy, freddy and freddy on offense. The major issues in the red zone and other scoring chances are that no one other than freddy could do a thing. Even the bowl game was a joke 17 catches long short under and over it was all freddy. What will we do next year without the 2 will we be better .
2) 0 running game _____ what was the problem?? was it play calling , a philosophy or could we simply not run the ball... Clawson ,,, I thought was a firm beleiver in running the ball ... We were throw throw throw and no teams ever had to respect the run.
3) Poor defense... Just watch yesterdays game.. Idaho went up and down the field and scored at will... no toughness,, couldnt stop them when it counted..
4) I think the MAC was as bad as its ever been this year... Temple wins 9 games!! miami oh was awfull, ball state awfull,, Buffallo down, akron fires coach ,, Toledo , kent average teams at best .. this was the year that BG could have won the east.
Jetter is a bright spot but without barnes and sheehan we win 2 games.. Who is the QB and o to WR next year.. Who makes up for 150 receptions next year .......... CAN WE RUN THE BALL AND STOP SOMEONE WHEN IT COUNTS
My honest thoughts and some are negative

When you lose as many wide receivers as we did during the season, you tend to have your #1 wide-out making almost all of the plays. Next point.
Didn't Geter have 96 yards rushing and 2 TD's? I think that's pretty good in my opinion.
The defense was very terrible. I will give that to you. Hopefully next year we will see a more dominant defense.
The MAC had a down year, and it is showing in the bowl games again this season. However, BG is on the way up from what I can see, which means we either will be top of the conference, or middle of the conference with a better conference surrounding us.
ROLL ALONG!!!
Re: My honest thoughts and some are negative
To address your points:
1) I think our other wide outs did just fine this year - you have to have the ball thrown to you in order to catch it. Wright and Hodges are young and Freddie is Sheehan's favorite target - it happens a lot in football. Also remember that Pronty was out for the season.
2) I'm not sure why we didn't run the ball, but who cares? You can't argue our offensive production. That's not the reason we lost the game.
3) Agree.
4) While everyone will only remember the MACs win/loss record, the MAC is competing in every game we are in. Who would have thought a couple years ago that Temple would stand toe-to-toe with UCLA? I think we have a lot to be proud of in the MAC. Many of the commentators yesterday called the BG-Idaho game the best of the bowl season so far.
"without barnes and sheehan we win 2 games"
What other college program could lose it's 2 marquee players and survive? Not many - look what happened to Oklahoma after Bradford went down.
The D definitely needs an upgrade. But I think our strength has always been outscoring our opponents.

It's the new year and I missed where the definition of "some" was changed to "all."

thanks for cudos keep enjoying the lack of punctuation, its mis use, and outright awe-full spelling and my wonderful world of dyslexia, its a pleasure.
The reality is BG has the hardest time finding talent, the scouts need to look beyond the current abillites and look for the youth that will bloom while in his jr or sr. ITs difficult, no it real hard, and to their credit they do a great job discovering the hidden talent. The down side is, we will never have enough talent to honestly be competitive in the top half of D1, especially with a "national championship" that is voted on by the media and system that makes it 99% impossible to even play in meaningful bowl games. Look Bosie. they have lost what one or two games in 3 seasons and they are not even playing for much earned shot for the electoral championship, because the BCS wont allow it, they know just by having them in the top 6 bleeds quality recruits to them.
Yes we sadly do end up with couple guys each season on both sides of the ball who amount to getting the most props for what they contribute. It is the way it always will be.
this season exceeded expectations, largly in part to Clawson and crews ability to coach these kids and get the best out of them week in and out. He is a very good coach, and likely will also leave in a couple of years because will not be able to afford to keep him.

Re: My honest thoughts and some are negative
I think the first part about losing Freddie is the biggest key. We don't have a skill guy who is a game changer other than Geter, and he isn't a major threat and is injury prone. Our entire offense was based on Freddie making plays or the threat of him making a play.
We'll see how good of a recruiter Clawson is, our last 2 coaches found skill players, hopefully he can find some as well.Regardless, we're 2 season's away from competing for a conference championship, minimum.

Re: My honest thoughts and some are negative
How many of us thought it was all doom and gloom when Harris left? Look losing Freddie is big, but he has an entire off season to find replacements. I will wait until next year to pass judgement on next years team.
Here is a question for the OP. If Freddie was our sole source of offense, is it good coaching to find ways to get him open?

I think you're right there. While we all probably would have figured Freddie to be the top receiver on the field this past year, no one could have predicted even a fraction of what he put up and the game-changing/saving performances he put up on a weekly basis. We have a ton of WR's who got plenty of reps this year, I think we'll be fine. As long as one of them puts up a 150 catch, 1,700 yard season, I think we'll be fine.daspollak wrote:How many of us thought it was all doom and gloom when Harris left? To answer your question about Barnes- I think that we as an offense were to dependant on him .. BG lost 6 games this year , so lets not make this season out to be something that its not.. We had red zone issues and could not run the ball. We had trouble scoring when it counted in many of the 6 losses. I think it was due to the fact that we had no other alternatives. Shotgun / 1 back almost every snap, no run threat at all. Yes , we got the ball to the playmaker barnes, but if im on the other side Ill give a WR 17 catches and take the W...
