NIU to Silicon or Independence...

The MAC has now signed an agreement with the Independance Bowl and they pick after the MCB pick. This is probably the best bowl of the MAC bunch. $1.2M payout and a match up against a Big 12 opponent, probably Ok State on Dec. 28th, after all of the X-mas running around and the time when you kick back and watch football. Boy...I'm jealous. Oh well, better to have a bowl than no bowl at all. Also, better to have GMAC than that dreadfully cold MCB.

In a perfect world... Miami wins and goes to MCB. Independence takes NIU to a lucrative game. And Toledo has to all the way across the country for the silicon valley game, they have a terrible following, and are the laughing stock of the country.

Congrats to NIU. It looks like you will get your WELL DESERVED bowl. Best of luck in that game!

rc_ziggy: Bingo on that one!

Good to see the MAC getting a better payout, too. Remember, we all share in this bowl money!

though deep down i know it's solely to bash toledo, but that you said (and i'm paraphrasing) "in a perfect world, miami wins the mac title" just warms my heart coming from a bg fan! :D

Believe me, it's a "lesser of two evils" thing

bah... why don't we just pack the buses and head west after the GMAC, and play in the Independence Bowl. It would save UT/Miami/NIU all kinds of travel time and expense, and increase the share of the bowl for the conference. We'd be helping everyone! Sure, it would be a 5 day week to prepare, but that's a small sacrifice to make to help the conference in such a crucial way.

Word on the street (no official sources here, just Internet freaks who I trust) is that our payout will only be $750,000. The rest was needed to grease the deal that got the MAC into that game.

The way it will work is probably this: The Independence Bowl contrives away for the MAC to return the portion of the guarantee that exceeds $750,000 (perhaps by taking on marketing expenses that would otherwise be shouldered by the bowl). The bowl then sends that money to another program or conference to keep them happy for accepting a game with a smaller payout.

I'm pretty sure the MAC will only be getting $750,000... less sure about the rest of the mechanics I've described.
