Freddie Barnes invited to Senior Bowl

I was standing on the sidelines and overheard a guy on his phone talking to someone saying, "he needs to be here, he wasn't invited to the combine, this is his best shot, the wide receivers haven't been too impressive, its beautiful here." and i suspected he was talking about Barnes. I was right. I checked my twitter when I got back from practice. Barnes tweeted that he got an invite.
Would be great to see him down here. No receiver has stood out this week and this is his best shot at shooting up draft boards considering he didn't get a combine invite.

That is a good sign for Freddie!
I have to believe he's going to be getting a combine invite as well. I can't imagine being invited to the Senior Bowl but not the combine.
The unfortunate thing is that the invite to this game came so late. NFL teams will usually be almost completely cleared out of Mobile by the time the game starts, and honestly couldn't care less about the actual game. It's the practices that they watch and use as scouting tools. If he's going to join, I hope he's on the first plane he can catch to get down there and start practicing tomorrow.

Congratulations to him! Hope he, Price, and LeFevour show the scouts what MAC football has to offer.
Been hearing good things about Price out of Mobile -- hope Freddie gets down there quickly and puts together another good outing.

I was watching the North practice on Monday. Kyle Wilson, CB, Boise State has crazy "skeelz". May explain Freddie's low stats against the Broncos. I can't recall if #1 from the Broncos was on Freddie much, but this kid was dominating the North receivers on Monday.
Another Falcon opponent is shining during Senior Bowl practices: "...it's hard not to keep an eye on Mike Iupati, the offensive guard from Idaho, who is generally considered to be the best guard prospect in this 2010 NFL draft. As Senior Bowl practice opened Tuesday, he "tossed around defensive linemen as if they were rag dolls in drills" Tuesday." (per MLive.com)
Who is that talking to Iupati??

I agree that its unfortunate that Freddie has missed most of the Senior Bowl practices. One, the real chance to impress the scouts is during practices. Secondly, he won't have much time to develop timing with the quarterbacks, which could present problems during the game.
But the buzz alone being created means Freddie's stock is on the rise in the eyes of the NFL scouts.

Probably not a bad call on his part. As I posted before the only thing they care about is the practices and he wouldn't have been able to get down there and start practicing until today, and that would have been after coming off a plane flight last night. Hardly ideal practice conditions.
Better to sit it out than it would be to go down and have a sleepy bad practice session.
It's unfortunate that he didn't garner an invite to this game immediately. It is far more prestigious than the Shrine Game, and would have done wonders for him to show his skills in this venue.
The late invite, does however, seem to indicate that teams are starting to think about him a little more now. Hopefully he'll get a combine invite.

I think his buddy from Wisconsin blowing his knee out on Monday might have had something to do with it as well.

Nah, they just open up more roster spots if there's someone thats drawing considerable interest. And also Brandon LaFell was a no-show. Justin Cole was the replacement for Schofield. Since Barnes declined, Youngstown State wide receiver Donald Jones came down today and performed pretty well.

I think this is a curious decision. I understand his and hammbs logic
1. Time better spent working on running.
2. Not enough time to impress down there.
But what Barnes needs is exposure. He needs more scouts who are wowed by him. He could do that by showing up last minute to the Sr Bowl...which every scout is going to realize and take into account that he is doing....and having a good performance. I think that some scouts may frown upon turning it down.

That might be true if it were his last opportunity to impress the scouts. He still has his pro day at BG...and maybe a shot athe combine (not invited yet, but he still could be). I think he can also attend pro days at other Ohio campii if he so chooses. If he has a great pro day with a sub 4.5 40 (I know...I agree that the whole 40 thing is a bit of a joke) He could also do individual work outs for NFL teams....those are generally held for higher status picks, but it's not unheard of for a guy in that 3rd round range (where he might find himself with a great pro day) to get worked out also.

I meant on his decision not to attend...ya know...like the fear of blowing out his knee and ruining any shot at the NFL that he might have?

Sometimes people dont run on their pro day because they "stand on combine numbers". This might just be a similar case. Maybe he thought he did so well at the E/W that he couldn't gain that much from the Senior Bowl. As an ignorant observer I would disagree. But then again I was not there.
