After verbally committing to a Big Ten program four months ago, Lely cornerback Jhony Faustin is again looking for a college to play football for less than a week before National Signing Day.

Faustin, the Daily News Defensive Player of the Year, committed to Purdue in September, picking the Boilermakers over five other NCAA Division I programs. Lely coach Dave Miller said Friday, however, that Purdue pulled the offer because Faustin hasn’t qualified academically.

National Signing Day, the first day high school seniors can sign letters of intent to play college football, is Wednesday.

“Jhony’s not going to sign because he still doesn’t have his test scores,” Miller said. “Purdue pulled his scholarship because they didn’t want to wait on him.”

Faustin took the SATs last week and will take the ACTs in early February to try to score high enough to qualify with the NCAA. Miller said Bowling Green likely will offer Faustin a scholarship if he qualifies.

“Everyone else has backed off,” Miller said. “If he doesn’t (qualify), he’ll probably go to junior college next year.”

IMO, we'd be nuts to offer this kid a scholarship. What good does it do to sign "highly rated" players who'll likely wind up ineligible? And we've especially been "snakebit" by several Fla. players over past couple of years... not worth th risk, again, IMO.

H2O,
I didn't say we KNEW kids from Fla. wouldn't make it, but signed them anyway. But the fact is that we HAVE lost several kids from Fla. for various and sundry reasons over past few years... 2 kickers in one yr...a couple of dropouts, whether academic or not...perhaps they couldn't deal with NW Ohio winters...who knows for sure on them...My point is..it's not worth the risk to sign this kid if he's a "non-qualifier" at this stage of his HS Senior year...unless he was ill and couldn't take the ACT or SAT earlier.

And of course you know I'm just yanking TG's chain-every school in the MAC takes chances on kids academically and otherwise- we've had trouble holding on to Florida kids, too- Cadet being an example.

Just yanking my chain? Uh oh... in that case, I'd use water on that flaming brown bag that's sitting on your front porch. :-D
