Suisham signs with Cleveland
The Browns waived rookie Leigh Tiffin and signed Shaun Suisham. Apparently Dawson is in a contract dispute and is skipping the voluntary workouts.

First of all, I love this.
On a more logical level. The Browns got someone who knows how to kick in some pretty abysmal Ohio conditions.

Suisham will be camp fodder in Cleveland.
Dawson is one of the better kickers in the NFL...they'll get a contract worked out with him.

Unfortunately, you are probably correct. I am just glad to see he was signed by another team. That means he still has a name in the league. And you never know, perhaps they may drop Dawson if he requests too much money, or keep Suisham on for kickoffs or something of that nature.hammb wrote:Suisham will be camp fodder in Cleveland.

Agree with hammb. Dawson isn't going anywhere.
But this puts Suisham in camp, which is good and by the time the Browns let him go, there will almost undoubtedbly be another team looking for a kicker.

Shaun's always been a pretty reliable kicker...would be nice for him to find a permanent home somewhere. At least he gets to wear the Orange and Brown for a while.

How many years has Suisham been in the NFL now? I would hope he get to five years.... isn't that when you vested in their retire program?

I believe you're right that it is 5 years.Tech83 wrote:How many years has Suisham been in the NFL now? I would hope he get to five years.... isn't that when you vested in their retire program?
Shaun's going to be a weird case though, because I'm pretty sure it is 5 complete years, and he's had a lot of partial years in the league. Wouldn't surprise me to see him stick around long enough to become vested though. Shaun is a pretty decent kicker. He's not great, but he's good enough to deserve a roster spot, IMO.
I'm a little disappointed that the best offer he could land was Cleveland. Maybe I'm wrong, but I just don't see him having a very good shot at making the roster there.

It's three years, and you get credit for a year by playing in 3 games. After 5 years you get other options that can make your benefits go up.

Re: Suisham signs with Cleveland
I stand corrected. Shaun will definitely be eligible for some benefits then. He has played in 3 or more games 6 different seasons (05 & 06 with Dallas, 06-09 with Washington).daspollak wrote:It's three years, and you get credit for a year by playing in 3 games. That's excellent news. I sure we all want to see his career continue, but I want to see him get those retirement benefits.

NFL pensions aren't as grand as you think. A 10-year player will average around $51,000 when they receive it at 55 yrs old. Now they do have an adjustment for inflation which will bump it up higher, but I hope he is investing some of that money that he is making.

If you wisely manage the $750,000 to $5,000,000 you make every season, the $51,000 a year should be plenty to get you through your golden years. Hell, I'd take that 51k a year right now!
