NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! :(

Post by hammb »

Well guys a great 2 year tradition looks like it might be coming to an end...or at least it's gonna have to be changed up a bit!

I went to my grandparents' to pick cherries the other day. I wanted to make a few pies, and I had a bottle of rum that was practically begging me to have cherries placed in it.

Well, I got there and there wasn't a single cherry on the darn tree. Not ONE usable cherry! Talked with grandma and she said she got enough a couple weeks ago to make one pie, but between the weather and the birds it was not a good year for them. She said there weren't as many as usual, because of the hail the ones she did pick were full of bad spots, and the birds pretty much ravaged what was left :(

So now I'm not sure if I'm going to buy some cherries to put in the rum, or if I'll just skip a year with no rum cherries. I'm thinking I may have to buy some...a year without rum cherries just doesn't sound right, now does it???

Sorry to hear about the cherries. Our baby sitter is allegedly bringing us some cherries back from Traverse City. I doubt if she will bring back as many as I want, but if she does and you are interested maybe I can hook you up. They are supposed to be unsprayed/homegrown from the orchard of a family friend.

Do you know what kind they are?

I have always used the small round "pie" cherries. They're really sour and add a great flavor to the rum. I can buy the sweet bing cherries in the stores, no problem, but I don't ever see the pie cherries in the stores around here.

I could probably just use maraschino cherries too...they'd be sweeter, but probably still good :) As it is the cherries taste like burning, but the rum is what always tastes sooo good. Maybe with some maraschino cherries the cherries would still be edible (not that it's ever stopped me...or Marta's kids ;))

I've picked about five gallons in the last two weeks and finally quit because I'm tired of pitting them. Unfortunately the second of three main trunks fell off last week and the core is pretty rotted- this may be my last year- had two pies already with two more on the way this weekend. I've frozen most. I think they're Morenci and they are the sour pie cherries you think of when you think of pies.

I am not sure yet what variety cherries they are. When we vacation in Traverse City we normally get the tart cherries.

Kids love to sit around the campfire having cherry seed spitting contests.

Yeah. Because that's the only reason to keep your daughter away from this bunch.

I'm wondering if those cherries Hammb has been eating are fermented. wonder how many it takes before you post about food in the football forum.

Haha...the cherries weren't fermented. They were soaked in rum. They taste like solidified rum when it's all said and done. But the rum tastes awesomeness of cherry rum :)

And yeah, I debated whether to put this in the food forum or the football forum. It's a tailgating topic, so I went with football...

I didn't want to lower the tone of this establishment by making any comments about daughters, tailgate parties, and cherries. Oops, I guess I ruined that. ](*,)
