UT bothered by bowl bid

Everyone's personal favorite John Harris has an interesting article on how UT feels slighted in the bowl selection process. They're (Brennon, UT Board of Trustees chairman is) bitter that BG was selected before UT was.

"When I heard that Bowling Green was already locked in and preparing for a bowl game and counting their money, and your two best teams have yet to play, I don't think that's fair," Brennan said.

I remember BG having to wait until after the championship last season to find out if we were going to the MCB. I remember being concerned that NIU may be selected over us. Meanwhile, Miami already knew it was going to the GMAC. That's just they way it works with the MAC's automatic bid. The GMAC selects earlier than the MCB because its earlier in the bowl season. Plus, in my heart of hearts, I thing the GMAC prefered us to UT.

It seems that all NIU is doing is complaing about their bowl bid too!!
Is this Brennan guy the one at Team Sports......if so, I need to take some business elsewhere!

I don't even understand the column. At all.

It's clear Dan Brennan's vagina is hurting him. It isn't clear why.

After all, if the GMAC wanted the Rockets... then why didn't the GMAC take the Rockets?

And how is this Rick Chryst's fault?

Does Dan Brennan think Rick Chryst ought to personally drive out to Toledo every weekend and give him a personal massage?

Does John Harris ever make more than one telephone call per column?

Many questions.

Few answers.

I understand their concerns. Quite honestly, I was surprised when the GMAC bowl picked us when they did. They ususally are looking to grab the MAC champion, but for some reason went after us despite finishing third in our division (making us the fourth best MAC team). Maybe they were impressed with the following that we had to the Motor City Bowl, or maybe they were afraid of Miami winning the title game and then having the RedHwaks two years in a row. I don't know, but I am happy they picked us. Interestingly enough, Toledo has never been to Mobile so you would think that they would have been a good choice to go to the GMAC. for whatever reason, I really think it was because the GMAC committee wanted Bowling Green. I really don't think Chryst is to blame.

Typical of some idiot BOT person talking out of their ass without knowing how things work. I don't know if GMAC wanted BG over Toledo. Nobody really knows. However, the GMAC is way before the MAC Championship game. I would imagine that because the Motor City Bowl is the largest bowl we have a tie to, that they told Cryst that they want to gaurantee big crowd and wanted the MAC Champions. So, GMAC had to choose from NIU, Marshall and BG.

I think Marshall would have travelled the biggest crowd to GMAC.

That is just a guess. But, Harris is a tool. This BOT person is a dumbass.

UK,
Interesting that we're "counting our money" isn't it? Thought bowl money was SHARED by members of the conference..Of course, we could forget to count UT in that I guess. And you're right on about our "late bid" last year. The year before the MCB extended the bid to UT right after our game if I recall correctly...

It is amazing that at a point where they should be elated to be in any bowl game, they are unhappy that BG was selected before them. If NIU had been picked, or even Miami, I know they wouldn't have said anything. However it was BGSU that was selected, and in doing so, the GMAC Bowl basically said they consider the Falcons a more attractive team than even That school, with our without a title.

Their protest gives weight to two things I feel. Our program is better than theirs, despite losing this years game. They are very thin-skinned when anything related to BGSU is involved in a conversation about them.

As usual, I'm embarrassed for my profession everytime I hear about a John Harris column.

The GMAC picked their MAC participant before the MACC last year, as pointed out earlier. They pick that team, I'm certain, with input from the MAC & Rick Chryst, but, in the end, it is their decision.

The pick was made and the MAC had its third tie-in with the SVC, at which point they said that the MAC champion would go to the MCB. That makes the worst-case scenario losing the MACC and going to the SVC (if the MAC only had those three bowl tie-ins).

You're in a bowl. Be happy. This goes for the NIU fans who are griping (though I believe them to be in the minority; I think most Huskie fans are happy for and proud of their team ... and rightly so).

Geesh.

Wow!Mr. Brennan really must think he has a lot of pull.He sounds a little threatening at times. So TU traveled well to the Motor City............I really don't think they would travel all over the country to see their team play. When they went to Detroit and lost to BC they gave away a lot of tix and we still out drew them last year. What relavence you might ask?Our alumni base is spread out a lot farther than theirs. This may come as a shock to some TU grads..............but you can move away from home when you graduate. But I digress(isn't that the case anytime you talk about TU?)My point being that we brought fans to Detoit from far away,I'm sure we will travel to anywhere.More "Bowl Envy"from the conference.

Casual- Impressive a coherent post that isn't done to "set anyone off"

You've got a long way to go, but this post seems to be step one. :D

As for GMAC picking first I think your reasons are spot on as to why MCB would prefer Toledo/MAC CHamp. ANother thing to take into consideration is when the GMAC is played- it is somewhat early in the bowl season and Memphis had been named for over a week. The team they are facing needed to be decided ASAP for team and fan planning.

Brennan is just another rockette with a serious case of Falcon envy. Deal with it, Elektra did...

Some people aren't happy with bowl games, they think the grass is greener in a tournament.

Brennan also told me UT has received overtures about joining other conferences, but until this recent episode had never entertained the possibility of leaving the MAC. "We're still here because we desire to be here," he said. "Sometimes I wonder."
I call BS.

the rest of the article
Wow, these guys could not possibly cry me a bigger river. We all got bowls. Toledo knew they were getting a bowl win or lose in the MACC. shut up.

I think the SI.COM article posted on another thread nailed why the GMAC picked BG. Rothlisburger, LaDamion Tamlinson, Byron Leftwhich ..... (please ignore the spelling). The GMAC had built a nice little history of some very successfull high profile NFL players who have played in their bowl. Exciting, tons of TD's, offense, offense, offense. I would not be suprised if they didn't really want to add Omar Jacobs to their growing list. For the next two years when BG is in the national spotlight, it will be free press for the GMAC. This selection may be a lot more then just about this year and how well BG did or didn't do. GMAC just bought themselves a piece of the next 2 years with Omar. Probably a good investment!!!!!!

So UT really wanted to go the GMAC bowl instead of the MCB. The Blade couldn't have conveyed the sense of jealousy and envy better if they had printed it with green ink....
