Brandon to Indiana?

Post by BayernFan »

Hello Falcon Fans!!!

Big time Indiana Football fan here!!

Say, the latest scoop over here in Bloomington is that Coach Brandon is one of three finalists for the Indiana Head Coaching job. The other two (we think) are Bob Patterson, TCU Head Coach, and KSU DC Bob Elliott. There is also rampant speculation that Rick Neuheisel (MY personal favorite) is in the running as well. But to be honest the feeling is that Brandon may be the better fit for the Cream and Crimson, and that he is, in fact, that odds on favorite.

IU is making every effort this year, from the new President and the new AD (both football guys) to the Board of Trustees, to build a successful program with significant investments in Coaching and facilities. Word is that IU is ready, able and willing to pay up to seven figures for the right HC.

So what about it, Falcon fans?? Is Brandon up to the job?? Tell me about him. Our AD may want a new coach to bring over most if not all of his current staff (IF he is a HC, like Brandon is, of course). Who is on his staff over there?? What kind of offense and defense do y'all get to watch on Saturdays??

Anyhoo, congrats on your upcoming Bowl Appearance. I see its 12/22, which may be a factor in this hire. With BG, the Bowl game is early enough that IU may be able to wait for Brandon till 12/23, without losing too much recruiting time.

And thanks in advance for any info you have and your honest thought and opinions!!

Go Falcons!!! GO IU!!!

I think if he waits a year, he'll be in line for a much better job than IU.

Here's an article about Coach Brandon that appeared in the BG News today:

That should say it all for you...

This would describe the Indiana job.

"You could pay me a million dollars," Brandon said. "But if we're getting our butts kicked it isn't any fun."

I feel bad for this Indiana guy, too. He seems nice.

But, yes, I agree. Brandon has to know that if he waits a while, he can get offers from more promising programs.

For the IU guy, I'll try to sum up the varying opinions here on Brandon:

We all like the guy. He's a straight shooter and enthusiastic about his work. He has a track record of extreme creativity when it comes to the offense and made Falcon football very fun to watch. And, last year, he took us to our first bowl game in 11 years.

Our defense this year is a bit suspect, but we aren't necessarily laying the whole thing on him. It's only his second year.

Recruiting: It is said that Brandon played a fairly strong role in luring two of our best players here: Omar Jacobs and Cole Magner (who we found all the way up in Palmer, Alaska). His last class also contains some gems (defensive handyman Peter Winovich, who is playing as a true freshman, and Anthony Turner, a quaterback who redshirted this year).

Still, the jury is out. He's now at work on his third recruiting class. It's early, but we've seen some mixed signals in terms of how successful it will be.

I think all of us sense he's growing on the job. A few play calls here and there have raised eyebrows. I think there have been one or two cases where he showed some rough edges in terms of the PR side of the job. Nothing major though, or worth getting into here.

Bottom line: He's maintained the record of success that Urban Meyer started and did something Meyer never quite managed to do: Lead us to bowl games.

Brandon is probably very good.

He also has his quiet skeptics... but no one is calling for his head.

Amstutz, Novak, Pruett and Hoeppener all have coaching longevity at their respective institution. These also just happen to be four of the best programs in the MAC the last 7-10 years.

If we have to go to our third head coach in fours years, I worry about the continuity of our program. On the other hand, why are people going after our head coaches and not any of these guys????

Bayern?

Bavaria is a long way from Toledo. There is no such thing as a big time Indiana football fan. And there is no orgasmically happy Egg.

Indiana is talking to Cooper, Solich and Charlie Taaffe.

On the otherhand, Rob Spence has talked to Clemson for the OC. Alvarez is interested if needed for Notre Dame, and one other school has been in contact.

Indiana isn't talking to any of those guys with the exception of maybe Taaffe. And your little slam on IU is pretty funny, considering how much IU has dominated the MAC. IU is 25-4-1 all-time against the MAC.

That's super! It's a shame you struggle so mightily against the rest of the college football universe.

Well, fair enough I guess. I think we were probably focusing on your all-time 43% winning percentage, more than thirty years since you won the Big 10, 10 straight losing seasons, 16 years since you finished the season ranked....stuff like that.

Still, we probabaly did come off a little negative, and you guys were just asking about Coach Brandon. Indiana is a great University and a Big 10 University, and may well be committing to rebuilding its football. It just looks historically like one of those places its real hard to win.

We'd be honored to play you home and home, BTW.

"I have good players coming back and we are going to win next year," he said. "I can be very happy here in Bowling Green."
Uh oh...I hope he didn't get PR lessons from Urbie...

To the alleged "big time IU football fan": what about talk of Frank Solich coming to Bloomington? I live in Indy and the word is he contacted Mr. Greenspan (IU's AD) saying he was interested. Mr. Greenspan was the AD at Army last year when most thought Solich would be their next football coach. Just wondering if you had heard anything on that front.

As far as Brandon, I think he has enough of an ego to think he can stick it out another year or two at BG and be successful and then get a much better and more high profile job (and higher paying) than Indiana. But, I would not blame him for leaving for the cash and the chance to turn around a Big 10 program. Look at Coach Blackney, he had offers to leave in the early to mid-90s, he declined and look what happened. I would never blame a coach for leaving for a Big 10 school from a MAC school. I hope Coach Brandon stays, but don't immediately count him out of consideration for the Indiana job.
GO BG! Omar for '05 Heisman!

I'm not quiet!!

But you're, right I'm not calling for his head either. I certainly wouldn't cry to see him coaching in Bloomington next year though.

... and Bowling Green is 3-2 against the Big Ten so far for this century.

I'm with O&B. A home and home series with Indiana would rock.
