Non-Bowl Championship Series conferences, Bowl Championship Series…Confusing title, right? :coo-coo: I assure you that there is "some" logic involved with this thread. I have been thinking about this idea for sometime and think it makes sense for Non-BCS conferences. It's a minor step to combat the have's (BCS teams) trying to keep the have-not's (Non-BCS) out of the money. Sure, Utah managed to break a Non-BCS team into the BCS for the first time in its existence, but other than this one time, Non-BCS teams haven't gained access to the pot o' gold at the end of the BCS rainbow. And since it seems unlikely that the BCS will relinquish its grasp on membership and allow the current non-BCS teams into their club, I propose an alternative Championship.

The idea would be for all of the Non-BCS conferences (C-USA, MAC, WAC, MWC, Sun-Belt, Independents) to align to do their own BCS bowl game for the best Non-BCS teams. For example, make sure the best two or four Non-BCS teams play each other in bowl games by using the existing BCS standings. I realize that Miami OH and UL played last year and this year's Liberty and GMAC bowls may have the best Non-BCS teams matched up, but this is not a guarantee that the best NON-BCS teams get to play each other. Moreover and may be most importantly, these games are not billed as a championship, just bowl games. So why not capitalize on this idea of a championship and ensure that the best Non-BCS teams meet each bowl season. Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather see BG play a top-tier Non-BCS team like Memphis every time out, instead of say mid-tier team from a BCS conference like last year's opponent Northwestern. I find these mid-major match-ups to be more intriguing.

The Non-BCS conferences could use the existing BCS rankings to pit the best Non-BCS teams against each other and then market the hell out of a championship. Everyone loves the little guy so why not showcase two of the best "little guys" against each other in a bowl game billed as the NON-BCS Championship. This is of course the key for the whole idea, by creating this game you now have a bowl that you can market as a championship. In the case of say a Utah this year, the Non-BCS BCS Championship would lose a little luster with them going to a BCS bowl, but you still have a great game you can market. Plus, more often than not, the Non-BCS teams are left high and dry when it comes to the BCS, so this problem only occurs every once in awhile. Come to think of it, it’s not a problem at all. A team like Utah gets BCS money and Non-BCS conferences still have a game that would likely increase revenue for all of the Non-BCS conferences. I have to think this Championship like this would be desirable for a TV contract and sponsors. This whole little thought may be nothing more than wishful thinking, but let me know what you think anyways.

hrmmm....interesting. However I see it as a way to further seperate the haves from the have nots. I'm not arguing that the Non BCS Championship game would be good and entertaining. However, I feel it would just further soildify our status as "Mid Majors" and we would never be looked upon as equals by the "Big" schools and the supposive experts. It is an interesting idea though.

UK- Thats a good idea. Though, I think they should make their own "BCS ranking" by way of our own formula, just to make sure there is no association with the BCS. They should name it something like, LCS: Legitimate championship series, or FCS: fair championship series, to further PO the BcS. (sorry for the lack of creativity in my titles, ive been folding plans for the last 2 hours, my brain is dormant)

Not to sound too negative, but that is basically admitted that we cannot compete on the D1A level. It would basically be saying that we were D1A½.

This guy presented a similar idea. I think you have to click on the archives and go to the 12/8/2004 article. Basic idea is for the Non-BCS leagues to get together and actually have a playoff to determine a champion. His idea is to also invite BCS league schools if they are interested (Auburn or Cal this year for example). It is an attempt to show those money hungry leagues that a playoff could be done if they would just give it a chance. Anyway I thought it was an interesting idea.

I'm not sold on this play off system idea. I feel that if a playoff were implmented it would destroy the prestige of the Bowls. Granted, I am in no way a far of the current BCS either. It is already tearing apart the bowl system, and what it was intended for. The fact that Cal got screwed and Texas is playing in the Rose Bowl, and that the number 6 BCS team is playing the 21st in one of the big bowls is terrible. Bowls were started as a "We'll send our best, you send yours and we'll see who's better" between conferences. Now people are trying to turn college football into a mini NFL. If I wanted that, I'd watch football on Sunday, not Saturday. Call me a backwards purest or what you will, but I think what we have now doesn't work, and it needs to be replaced by something that does work, while still keeping in mind what the Bowl Games were started as.

Isn't this the current view anyways among BCS conferences and Trev Alberts. The suggestion is a way to get more money for non-BCS teams, since it still seems unlikey that the BCS schools will be asking everyone to share in the BCS money anytime soon. It's not an admission that we are "below" the "major" conferences, it's only a way to maximize revenue for those NCAA conferences excluded from the equal opportunity they so deserve to the "big" bowls. I did like WH suggestion that the bid be open to a Cal or a Auburn, although this would defeat the purpose of creating a game for the teams that are left out of the big payday. Still interesting though.
