Pick the MAC, week 2!
Pick the MAC, week 2!
So ... oops for not getting this posted last week. And ... thanks to 24 for that! Here's the standings after week one. Byron, can you pick lottery numbers?

In summary, MAC fared pretty well, Ball State surprised the hell out of me and a whole lot of people, 'Nova disappointed, Akron laid an egg at Ohio State, NIU loudly and proudly declared themselves the team to beat, Ohio kicked the living tar out of the WAC's worst team, and BG dominated a team expected to compete for a WAC title. Not a bad week. Oh ... and Eastern Michigan won, therefore halfway to matching the win total of the last two seasons combined.
And now the week two games. Miami's got a bye, league play starts for Akron and Temple, Eastern Michigan gets their second straight FCS team, Toledo has a hard act to follow after Akron at Ohio State, and Northern Illinois is favored on the road at a (bad) Big 12 team.
Saturday September 10, 2011
Central Michigan at Kentucky, 12:00 pm
Toledo at Ohio State, 12:00 pm
Alabama State at Eastern Michigan, 1:00 pm
Stony Brook at Buffalo, 6:00 pm
Temple at Akron, 6:00 pm
Nicholls State at Western Michigan, 7:00 pm
Gardner-Webb at Ohio, 7:00 pm
Ball State at South Florida, 7:00 pm
Louisiana Lafayette at Kent State, 7:00 pm
Northern Illinois at Kansas, 7:00 pm
Morgan State at Bowling Green, 7:00 pm
And ... my picks.
UK. Kentucky is beatable by several MAC teams, but CMU's not one of them.
OSU. Toledo is all time 0-2 against Ohio State and all time scoreless against them. Don't be stunned if they remain all time scoreless after Saturday. That Ohio State defense is nasty good.
EMU. Eastern Michigan to start 2-0? One of the weakest 2-0 starts in history.
UB. UB played Pitt tough and won't lose to an FCS team.
Temple by a couple of miles. Let's see if Akron gets on the scoreboard this season.
WMU big. They played Michigan way better than the final score indicated.
OU big. OU is the team to beat in the east.
USF. Beating Indiana is really nice, but USF is likely to contend for the Big East title. USF's defense shuts down BSU.
Kent big. ULL is bad.
NIU. NIU is seven point favorites. I say they cover the spread.
BG. No doubt here, BG looks like a team that could stun the MAC.
I'll be keeping track of the standings as this goes along. As with last year, I'll give a small BG-related prize to whoever gets the most picks and whoever has the best winning percentage. Note ... to get best winning percentage, you have to play a lot. If somebody does really well three or four times and then bails ... yeah that's cheap. Have fun with this, and if I forget again, somebody either remind me or take care of it on your own!

Re: Pick the MAC, week 2!
MarkL I'll be your backup on this. Basically I'll do what I did in week 1, if this isn't posted by Thursday morning or thereabout each week, I'll get it up then.
I find it hilarious that the only game I missed on was Villanova-Temple. Evidently Villanova isn't a I-AA powerhouse anymore and Temple isn't going to fall off a cliff like I was thinking.
Week 2 picks:
Central Michigan at Kentucky, 12:00 pm - Kentucky - Central Michigan just doesn't seem to have the same gusto they had under Brian Kelly and Butch Jones. Kentucky big.
Toledo at Ohio State, 12:00 pm - Ohio State - Rooting like hell for the Rockets (wait, that didn't come out right) but think Toledo will have a hard time scoring points.
Alabama State at Eastern Michigan, 1:00 pm - Eastern Michigan - I see what EMU's doing. If you can't beat I-A teams, play a bunch of I-AA schools. Makes sense.
Stony Brook at Buffalo, 6:00 pm - Buffalo - The bulls should win this one pretty easily, though I think the jury's definitely out on them after a halfway decent performance at Pitt.
Temple at Akron, 6:00 pm - Temple - Villanova might not be good anymore, but they are better than Akron. Temple big.
Nicholls State at Western Michigan, 7:00 pm - Western Michigan - Hard to get a read on Broncos after impressive at times yet mistake filled game at Michigan, but they win here.
Gardner-Webb at Ohio, 7:00 pm - Ohio - It seems like Ohio plays these guys every year. Bobcats big.
Ball State at South Florida, 7:00 pm - South Florida - I proudly picked Ball State last week and thought about it again here but USF's defense is fast and might be too much to handle.
Louisiana Lafayette at Kent State, 7:00 pm - Kent State - This game, as with most games involving the Golden Flashes, scares me. I can never get a read on these guys, week 1 at Alabama didn't tell us much.
Northern Illinois at Kansas, 7:00 pm - Northern Illinois - Kansas was a major flash in the pan about 4-5 years ago, but it seems they've reverted to form. NIU wins.
Morgan State at Bowling Green, 7:00 pm - Bowling Green - The Falcons shouldn't have much trouble here and could run it up against a bad I-AA team (bad I-AA sounds like such an oxymoron)

Re: Pick the MAC, week 2!
Central Michigan at Kentucky - Kentucky certainly isn't the cream of the crop but CMU is not what they used to be. Kentucky.
Toledo at Ohio State - Toledo has no chance in this one. Ohio State rolls by 24.
Alabama State at Eastern Michigan - EMU is looking to get some wins this year and if they have to do it against FCS schools, so be it. EMU.
Stony Brook at Buffalo - Buffalo will handle this game easily.
Temple at Akron - Temple is good. Akron is not. Temple in a walk.
Nicholls State at Western Michigan - Western Michigan escaped Ann Arbor without too much damage. Should be an easy win for the Broncos.
Gardner-Webb at Ohio - OU is bad but Gardner-Webb is worse. OU.
Ball State at South Florida - USF is coming off a huge win against Notre Dame and should avoid a letdown. USF
Louisiana Lafayette at Kent State - Tough choice but I'll go with Kent.
Northern Illinois at Kansas - This will be a good test to see just how good NIU really is. I think they are for real. NIU.
Morgan State at Bowling Green - ...and the parade of FCS schools playing MAC schools ends in Bowling Green where BG will go 2-0 for the first time since 2003. BGSU in a romp.
Toledo at Ohio State - Toledo has no chance in this one. Ohio State rolls by 24.

Re: Pick the MAC, week 2!
Quick picks this week:
Kentucky: Wouldn't be surprised if CMU won.
OSU: Wouldn't be surprised if 10 more players were ruled ineligible.
EMU: Next up is a PeeWee football team.
UB: A win is a win I guess.
Temple: What's with all the MAC teams playing FCS schools?
WMU: Afterwards I hear there will be baked treats.
OU: Another FCS school, really?
South Florida: This may be a better victory than Notre Dame.
Kent St.: Bama prepared them for this one.
NIU: Maybe next year this will be a MAC game.
BGSU: Another #%#@ FCS school.
