I am by no means perfect, and as members of this message board can certainly attest to, often times my posts can show a surly and unforgiving attitude. One possible reason for this is that I have a great memory, and can readily visualize things that happened many years ago. In the case of Bowling Green football, I remember many positive games, and unfortunately many negative ones too. The last six plus years have been a roller coaster of ups and downs, but there's one week of the season in particular that has been nothing but down.
When the Bowling Green Falcons take the field on Saturday, they won't just be facing the Wyoming Cowboys. They'll be fighting a monkey that's been on their backs for over six years. I'm talking of course about the Parent/Family Weekend Jinx, a hex that has been a crushing piston to the hopes for victory that we all share as falcon fans.
First of all, for those of you that are wondering what the heck I'm talking about...consider the following. BGSU has lost the last six seasons on Parent/Family Weekend, most of them in blowouts. Here's the laundry list of destruction:
2005 - Western Michigan 45 - Bowling Green 14
2006 - Kent State 38 - Bowling Green 3
2007 - Ohio 38 - Bowling Green 27
2008 - Miami 27 - Bowling Green 20
2009 - Central Michigan 24 - Bowling Green 10
2010 - Kent State 30 - Bowling Green 6
Since the beginning of the 2005 season, Bowling Green is a paltry 14-17 at Doyt Perry Stadium, for a 45% win percentage, with the 0-6 mark on family weekend really acting as a drag on that record. (BG is 35-38 in all games over that span). BG is 14-11 on all non-family weekend home games since 2005, for a win % of 56%, which is awfully far north of the 0% for the 6 aforementioned unlucky games. What's really wild is that outside of Kent State's two family weekend wins over BG in 2006 and 2010, the last time they beat BG was way back in 1999.
This game coming up is probably our best chance to end the hex since we faced a terrible Miami team in 2008, but ended up getting double crossed courtesy of the infamous Miami Whammy. Wyoming may not be a bad team, but they are unheralded enough that we should be able to put this damn thing to bed once and for all. Let's hope 7th time is the charm.
Then we can take aim at the up-and-coming homecoming hex, where we've lost our last 3...et em.
