Toledo should have won 30-29

Post by gmartin »

So much for instant replay being accurate. Technically Toledo should have won 30-29. I wonder what Tim Beckman will have to say about this......

Syracuse gained a 30-27 lead on Ryan Nassib's 18-yard lob to Alec Lemon at the back of the end zone with 2:07 left in the fourth. Officials reviewed the extra point by Krautman, which appeared on a replay to be wide but was allowed to stand. After the game the Big East released this statement in regards to the play: "After studying the videos of the Syracuse extra point attempt at 2:07 of the fourth quarter, we have concluded that the ruling on the field that the kick passed between the uprights was incorrect, and that the replay official made an error in failing to reverse that ruling. In reviewing the video, we have determined that the angle from behind the kicking team shows conclusively that the ball passes outside the right upright. "Our review of the process determined that the replay official mistakenly focused his attention on the sideline angle, which proved to be distorted. We are confident that our officiating staff will learn from this situation in order to prevent a reoccurrence. "

But then again coach Beckman should have had the balls to go for the win at the end of regulation.

Exactly...they were what, a yard short? Do you honestly think you're going to get a chance to win in OT by gaining a yard? Beckman choked on that one...

You really can't assume that final anyway. Syracuse would have played the last two minutes differently with a 2 point lead instead of 3.

Very true. But you know Toledo Tom #2 won't think that way. Still he should have went for the W, just like I feel Clawson should have went for the W last week opposed to OT

Exactly....go for the win when it's there. I thought it was the right all last year at Temple...it would have been the right call against Wyoming

On the road go for the win and at home go for the tie unless it is a vastly superior team you are playing at home (doesn't happen much with us).

I do like going for the win if you feel like you have all the momentum in the world. For example, your team just drove 90 yards down the field in under a minute with no time outs, your QB is on fire, your receivers are finding massive holes in the zone. I'd go for two in the situation, home, neutral, away, hot, cold, rain, wind, desert, perfect conditions, mud, fog, raining fire, earthquake, you name it.

And that's why I'm not a head football coach.

Yep..that's the conventional wisdom, but I like to push it....maybe that's why I have surgically implanted metal in both arms... :-)

I was waiting for this. Coach Beckman is blaming that one call for his teams loss. He called it an injustice. Filing petitions to the NCAA to have the win by Syracuse vacated. Between this call causing UT to lose the game and his whining about kids going to class on gamedays makes him look like a complete ass.

I knew it was just a mater of time before he complained. Hey Coach Beckman and Birdman, grow up, get some balls, and go for the W when the ball is at the 1 yard line.

And now AD, Mike O'brien, says he will re-evaluate who UT will schedule in the future as all the calls and officiating goes against them in the power conferences. I have seven words that would have solved the issue.

Go for TD at end of game

Toledo undeniably got screwed on that call. However, petitioning the NCAA to vacate the win based on that call is not going to get him anywhere. That would open up a huge can of worms, and I doubt the NCAA will entertain it. The entire concept of reversing the outcome of a game based on a referee's call, especially one not made at the end of a game, would set a precedence that could leave college football in utter anarchy. Every team that lost a close game would be searching their tapes for questionable calls looking for a way to request the same treatment.

Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it the responsibility of the away team to provide the referees during non-conference play? Perhaps Beckman should petition the MAC to start cracking down on officials that pull stunts like this. He already has two games with which to draw examples from this year.
