Just dont understand Notre Dame???

I still do not understand Notre Dame. One reason Meyer turned down the job to Notre Dame was that Florida offerend him 14 million over 7 years, where as Notre Dame only offered him 6.25 million over 5 years. So he gets 2 million a year at Florida, and offered 1.25 a year at Notre Dame. I think I would go to Florida too. Warmer weather, better recruits, lower standards. What I do not understand is why didn't Notre Dame offer Urban more money????

Notre Dame is going to make it official today the hiring of Charlie Weis, at a contract of 12 million for 6 years. That is 2 million a year. If they are going to pay Weis that, then why could they not fork out the better deal with Meyer?

Maybe they were arrogant and thought they didn't have to, but now have learned that they do.

Maybe Notre Dame didn't want to pay 2 million a year to Urban, but got caught trying to hire the bright boy on the cheap. So they hire some newbie out of the NFL and pay him a ton to save face. IF they don't want to seem like they won't keep pace with the top schools in pay, they had to do what they did.

Will this guy get the job done? I have no idea. But at 2 million a year, ND can demand more results faster, then look better when they dump him in three years.

I still think Willingham wanted out, and ND got wind of his talking to WA. They couldn't afford to be dumped, and thought they had an easy hire to replace him.

Well, I think Notre Dame was trying to use Urban's love for ND against him to try and get a bargain. The result was insulting Urban, who is now taking assistant coaches away from ND. ( http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=1943699 ) Oh well, ND has a long road ahead of them and I think they will be seeing more hard times than good.

Considering ND's offer came after Florida's, offering him less money is a huge insult. I believe Notre Dame is one of the richest schools in the land too (correct me if I'm wrong), so they could have easily matched Florida's offer or even gone higher if they REALLY wanted him there. They just flat out ruined any hopes of ever getting him in my opinion.

Urbie wanted JUCO's and 6 kids per year that would be exempt from Notre Dame's academic standards. ND said "no"....

To which I ask, what is really wrong with that? I understand on the surface, how ND wants to "maintain standards." Would it not be a better thing to bring those kids in, help them excel in what is a very hard program, and see them graduate, rather than tell them they can't play at ND? For a school that likes embracing the harder way of doing things, they appear to me to have taken the easy road. Giving kids a leg up on life would be making a bigger impact on the world than shutting the door, taking their ball, and going home.

To me, how and why the let them in, is less important than the fact they graduate.

I think those standards are the same ones that forced Rudy to go to St. Mary's College.

I agree with you Wart. If they let in JUCO's or Prop 48 students then they would have to redo the movie Rudy.

Ahhh....ND is struggling. I love it!

Seriously,
Nobody fears that school anymore. A lot like Penn State.

The powers that be at ND need to wake up. Notre Dame football is a valuable asset. With every subpar season, that value diminishes.
Taking a few kids a year that don't qualify academically but can be brought up to speed will not make Touchdown Jesus cry.

Certain acts of self enjoyment will lead him to kill a kitten though....
