2002 Bowling Green Football Staff

This was brought up in another thread and it is funny because about 2 weeks ago I pulled out my 2002 BGSU football media guide to check out that staff and find out what each member had been up to. Check it out:

Head Coach Urban Meyer: HC at Utah, Florida, currently HC at Ohio State
Assistant Head Coach-Offense Gregg Brandon: BG HC, Virginia OC, currently OC at Wyoming
Assistant Head Coach-Defense Tim Beckman: DC at Oklahoma State, HC at Toledo, currently HC at Illinois
ST Coordinator/Cornerbacks Tommy Thigpen: LB/CB Illinois, LB North Carolina, currently Safeties at Auburn
LB Co-Recruiting John Bowers: Career tied to wife who while he was at BG was Michigan Gymnastics coach, she got gig at University of Washington and he coached at a couple smaller NCAA schools before HC of a high school program and resigned after 2010 season
WR Co-Recruiting Billy Gonzales: WR Utah, WR Florida, current WR and Passing Game Coordinator at LSU
OL Tackles TE John Hevesy: OL Utah, OL Florida, current Asst Coach OL Mississippi State
QB Dan Mullen: Utah, Florida, current HC at Mississippi State
OL G C Greg Studrawa: OL/OC at BG, OL at LSU, current LSU OC
Defensive Line Mike Ward: DC at BG, current AsstHC/Def Coordinator at Toledo
Strength & Conditioning Aaron Hillmann: current Asst. S&C at Michigan

Has there been a stronger staff in the MAC since?

Would have been nice if they would have stayed together and really done something Boies like special here.

Well Saban was at Toledo in 1990...he's had some success.... :-)

Brian Kelly has been pretty good...

Bob Pruitt at Marshall was ok, but faded fast. Frank Lauterburg at Toledo during the late 60s early 70s had the famous MAC streak and had his team in the top 15 at one point. He too faded at Iowa soon after. Don Nehlan at BG was damn good but they fired him -- still can' figure that one out. Didn't surprise me WVU ran it up on BG this year - it was Don Nehlan Day.
Denny Stolz had one great year capped by the 51-7 fiasco in Fresno. Gary Blackney could do no wrong until he lost his wind.

One of our posters, it might have been '61, talked about the Nehlen firing once. As I recall, BG just couldn't seem to get over the hump, in particular beating Miami.

Stolz put together a pretty amazing team, that's for sure. Outside of covering volleyball, covering that football team was the best.

You've got a good memory. Nehlen's teams were akways good, just never seemed to be good enough, especially vs Miami. Went to MEECH as asst, then to WVU. =D>

Re Urban Meyer... He heads out west to Utah and coaches them to an unbeaten season with a #4 ranking in the final poll. Heads south to the SEC with the Gators and wins it all twice. Now he's back in the Midwest and he's got OSU in the mix for the national title. Has there ever been a college coach with that much success in that many programs, not to mention that many conferences covering such a wide geography?.....and he did it all in a decade.

Say what you will about the way he left, but this is some historic sh*t....
