Trent Hurley to leave BG

Trent Hurley will be leaving the BG program for SE MO St.

Although I can see why he would want to transfer, it will certainly be a blow to the QB position in terms of depth.

Hoping Matt Johnson or Malik Stokes can step up as the solid number 2.

Lets just hope that Schilz can stay healthy - as I'm sure neither Johnson nor Stokes would be as effective as Hurley could have been in an injury situation.

Not entirely suprised...Schilz is firmly entrenched and he's gonna be here two more years. I hope Hurley can get the playing time he wants at SEMO and I hope he tears it up for them.

I saw Trent Hurley in the spring game and he threw the ball as well as anyone I've seen here in the last 20 years.

Then he regressed over the summer, because at the scrimmage I attended over the summer, the only QB that was throwing the ball well was Schilz. Hurley had the offense stalled anytime he was in.

I wish nothing but the best for Trent. SEMO St is getting a good one.

Good luck to him. You have to halfway expect this sort of thing. Kids want to play and sometimes this is the only way they see that happening. Putting on my optimistic BG hat, I hope he saw that Johnson or Stokes were passing him so it was time to go. I hope Schilz is pushed and either wins the starting QB position or gets beat out by a better QB. Either way is good for us.

Hypothetical question: What if he transferred to UMass? Would UMass be considered 1AA (Trent plays next year) or 1A (Trent sits out a year)? Is it too late and if so, what if he announced before the end of the regular season? Is the 1AA season considered over while the playoffs continue?

Very disappointed to hear this, but not surprised one bit. I had the pleasure of meeting him and his family earlier in the season. But after speaking to him, as my wife and I turned and walked away, I looked at her and said there's no way he's coming back next year. I clearly got the impression that he and his family felt he should be starting and I could feel a little tension talking to them. I saw this coming back in September. But I do wish him luck.

Nice spot for Johnson and Stokes to move up a spot without waiting another year. My friend who works for Rivals raved about Johnson and saw him play in the Chesapeake Bowl. Said he was a dual-threat guy and from the way he described his game, I came away with the impression of him as a Julian Edelman-type of a player.

Just another example of how Clawson can't keep good players. Clawson should be the one to go. Sarcasm.

We lost two QBs once Omar established himself as the starter. It's just the way things work out. Now it will be important to stretch out the depth a bit at QB.

Right, not only was he not starting but he was only one year behind Schilz. I don't blame him a bit. He did look good in the spring game, but that's just a spring game. I guess I don't know how anyone can be "sure" about Johnson and Stokes, given what we have seen, but whatever. Johnson was a very successful HS player and is now two years behind Schilz, and the verbal (Knapke) from Fort Wayne won a state title for his team and set all kinds of records.

can't say I'm shocked, especially since Hurley is a QB, its the one position where most places are going to have one guy placing all the time, don't blame him at all for heading somewhere where he'll have a chance to play, and not lose a year

Best of luck to Trent at SE Mo. State...Schilz is the starter and Hurley wasn't gonna see the field much. I also hope he has a great run at SE Mo State.

Not to quibble - but I'm pretty sure Mr. K was QB the year before as well. Bishop Luers has won 3 consecutive football titles here in the state, so to have a run at 2 speaks a lot! Besides that, I have seen the kid play and he IS legit!! Just my 2 cents.
