Wide Receivers

WR seems to me to be the only weak point going into this next year. Every other position has depth, experience, and a bunch of birthdays returning.
At WR, we've got Joplin who played quite well down the stretch, and a bunch of young guys. I am excited about Coby and Gallon and I expect those two to have good years, and I'm looking forward to how our TEs play this year.
What WRs do you guys think are going to step up big this year?

I'm thinking Mr. Stokes might be ok? Speed alone and his ability to stretch the field should help us quite a bit.

Doesn't Stokes have to sit out for a year, or did he do that last year?

Jeeron Stokes will be eligible to play this fall. I think between Stokes, Allen, Joplin, Coby, Gallon and Jackson...we'll be OK or better. We have sick depth at TE and RB ....

I've never been concerned about WR. We always seem to find quality guys to put in there. My hope is we can find 2 go to receivers, like Smith and Sharron from years ago. This could help the running game, giving BG a proficient offense.

+1

I think we'll be better than okay at WR. We have a lot of talent, it's just unproven at this point. I'm actually more concerned about our QB play. Schilz played good last year.. not great, but good. My question is, is he going to be able to develop and take that next step to becoming a great QB? I'm hopeful he will, but there were times last year when he just looked downright awful. Not all his fault, but just saying.

If he can get to that next level, I don't think a bowl game and a MAC Championship is unrealistic.

Tyler Sheehan had his rough moments his first two years as well and turned out to be a very productive QB. I think Schilz takes a BiG step forward in spring ball and over the summer. Everyone knows the saying...QB's make their biggest improvement from their SO to JR year. The WR unit will be fine. As others have pointed out, we always seem to reload at WR.

I think anything less than a spot in the MAC title game would be a major disappointment. With 21 starters back, we should be one of the favorites, if not the main favorite, in the division. Especially with NIU and tsun losing so much from a year ago.

GO BG

the other key for Schilz is the line and the running game. Taking the pressure off of him--both on the rush but also keeping me in the box--will make a huge difference if BG can get it done.

I knew you were Schilz! Good Luck this year bro!

+1...the line was improved last year, but there's much room for addiitonal improvement. Schilz is very effective when he can set up in the pocket and drill the ball downfield. He's less effective when he has to throw on the run (like 90% of the QB's out there).

I think Matt's a good QB...given time, I think he'll be great here. For all you Schilz haters, suck on this... :)

GO BG

I think we'll be in the running this year...but with games at Toledo and NIU, winning the west is going to be a challenge.

I think Shilz strength is throwing the deep ball. The past 2 seasons with how poor the line play has been there really hasn't been a lot of chances for deep drops and deep routes.

Hopefully Stokes gives you a guy that stretches the field and lets guys like Samuels and Givens play in space underneath.

The defense should be good, the skill positions should be good. To me, this whole season is dependent on the o-line.

Schilz has the best arm of any starting QB we've had here in my memory. He's got a rocket.

And he's WAY better than most people seem to give him credit for. Sure he makes the occasional boneheaded decision, and yeah he goes through stretches as a scattershot, but by & large if he has time to throw he's a pretty damn good QB. ESPECIALLY when we show the willingness to let him air it out which is definitely his strength.

Deep ball guys like Schilz will always have a lower TD:INT ratio than a timing passer like Omar put up, but they can still be insanely effective (and VERY fun to watch).

Personally, I think if the OL gels this year Schilz is primed for a big year. His issues have mostly been growing pains that you would expect from a young QB. Now that he's had 2 years as a starter I expect a big step forward...should be fun to watch.

Hammb, please don't ever use that R word again around these parts!
