Looking Ahead...

Now that we're three games into the season and we've had enough of a sample of this year's team, where does everyone think they're headed? Do we feel as confident about the MAC schedule, outside of OU? Is this a bowl team? I'm just curious what everyone's thoughts are up to now.

After the Va Tech game the schedule really lets up.

URI, @ Akron, Miami, @UMass, Eastern, Ohio, Kent, and Buffalo.

IMO, we should be 6-3 heading to OU. 8-4 is what most people projected for this team and through 3 games that seems about right.

I guess the MOST disappointing thing to me so far this year (outside of NO kicking game to speak of) is our OFFENSE.... Last I looked we were 2nd from last in points scored, though we were around 3-4 in points allowed...so the Defense has played well overall, But they had to be feeling a sense of deja vu on Sat. after seeing a tall, left handed QB from Idaho create problems and then running into Toledo's version of the same.

That being said, the Offense HAS to get better; we've got some quality RB's, though there seems to be an overall reluctance to try to run the FB, an experienced QB, and some young WR's who've shown they can catch the ball (Ok, most can).... So WHY do we seem so "buttomed up" Offensively? The OL seems to be better than a year ago, despite starting 2 RS Frosh....IMO, if you can't run the FB consistently, you're in trouble in the long run. (no pun intended) :-k

Until we have consistency on offense every game on the schedule could go either way IMO. I don't see any sure wins and I don't see any sure losses.

FB?...do you mean the "football" or the "fullback". I agree with the former. The latter...I might agree with that if it's 1964... :)

Where we are now reminds me a bit of early 2004 when Omar had his first few starts. The offense was built around throwing the short ball and NIU beat us at their place by limiting us to a bunch of 5-6 yard completions (and Garrett Wolfe went insane that day). As the year wore on, we opened it up a bit and started scoring points at a record pace. Let's ditch the candy ass dink and dunk stuff and go all 1960's Daryl Lamonica on them and start gunning it...

This certainly doesn't help.

Campbell out indefinitely with a foot injury. A thin dline just got a lot thinner.

I agree with this...I have a feeling the games against Miami and Kent are toss ups at this point, and the game vs. Ohio is gonna be wishful thinking. The offense MUST open things up if they want a winning record going forward.

Absolutely. I am surprised this offense has stuggled so far. We knew it would be some time for the new WRs to get some chemistry but I'd like to see more of JeRon Stokes. If the O gets going, I'll stick by my 8-4 prediction. We did rush for 135 vs ut so let's get the running game going.

There is no certainty that this team can get to six wins. I see a lot of closer games ahead than many expected. I just don't have the confidence in this offense; and eventually, the defense gets worn down.

I think we're somewhere around 7-8 wins right now. The playcalling obviously needs to open up. I think some of that is a lack of trust in the receivers, but at some point you have to put them in a position to make plays and we haven't done so thus far. I'm actually pretty happy with our defense and even our running game; and when we open up the playbook and start passing, we do a pretty good job (see that drive against Toledo) but we just need to do it more. And Schilz has to make a few more plays, whether that be with his feet, stop telegraphing his throws, or get the ball out quicker. I'm still not sold he's the answer, but I'll give him a few more games before I bash too much.

Special teams is hurting, but they aren't getting much help from the offense either. The playcalling from about the opponent's 40 yard line to the red zone has been especially brutal. A couple field goals may not have been as long (nor even opportunities at all) had we just been more aggressive throwing the ball.

I'm definitely disappointed because we could realistically be 3-0, but the season isn't over yet.

Flip, Since we really don't have a "fullback" in the usual sense, I was referring to running the FOOTBALL, something we haven't done consistently well this year, despite a plethora of RB's who are probably the best group since PJ et al.

So far they've run 83 times and thrown 123 times. The opponents have run the ball 101 times and passed 88 times. Granted, that includes the Florida game where they were not confident in either QB. And the opposition is 2-1. I vote for doing whatever works.
