Something came to me last night...and I don't know if its valid but here goes. Tanski has been out for the last 4 weeks with the shoulder injury. Was he not the starter holding for kicks before he was injured? Alex Bayer is the holder now and I'm in no way, shape or form putting the blame on Alex. Dude is a hell of a tight end and holder. But, could it be having a different holder and the kickers possibly don't have the same mechanics or chemisty? At least in games? If these guys are making about everything in practice...it's maddening.
The biggest worry I have with Va Tech? Beamer's teams always block kicks and this could be a huge issue in the game. Man, I hope we have things ironed out.
Any thoughts?

IIRC Tanski was the holder for one of the kickers and Bayer for the other and I sure couldn't tell you which was which. And even with that, we have played three weeks. Holding issues should have been resolved. I think the kickers just are not performing in games the way they do in practice. There is no way in practice to simulate the pressure of an in game situation.

We are not alone with our kicking problems....Cal's PK blew three makeable kicks on Saturday against OSU...hell, the kicker from Alabama State is supposed to have an NFL leg and he missed a 44 yarder last night so badly that the ball was closer to the sideline than the upright.
We need to find some guy with high tops, a crew cut and a single bar face mask to come in and kick traight on. Like Don Cockcroft, Errol Mann or Mark Mosely
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

Not sure if it has had an impact this year or not, but the kicking has been poor for the last three years. I saw a stat that said BG was something like 15-30 over the last three seasons on FG attempts, with many of the attempts coming on short or mid-range attempts. DC said we have four kickers on scholarship and it amazes me we still have this problem. Some schools have no scholarship kickers and they are money. Let it be said, we will continue to lose more close games because of our downfall here unless we get it corrected. Personally, I would love to see us go the JUCO route here again and bring in a "proven" collegiate kicker. Someone who has proven in collegiate games capable of kicking field goals and PAT's. It worked out well for us a few years ago (last time we had a decent kicker). Because it seems the kickers we have brought in from the high school ranks seem to struggle not kicking of tees, and the unproven Michigan transfer we had didn't pan out either. I just hope to God we get it corrected because I am tired of holding my breath for even a PAT attempt. Especially after some of the outstanding kickers we have had at BG for 10-12 years prior to this mess.

And the Arizona kicker missed two chippies (24, 25) vs tsun...at home.
Flip, love the idea. I was a kicker in HS...straight on conventional. Would love to see somebody bring that back.

I would certainly settle for realistic options such as guys like Brian Leaver, Shaun Suisham or Derek Schorejs....

Jason Strasser was another solid kicker...late 90's.

We're not the only team with issues. As noted in the article, the MAC has the lowest FG% in ten years. This is a talent and conference wide epidemic, not just unique to BG.
Could this trend be the result of more soccer being played at the high-school level? That is, kids who are good kickers are passing on football and playing soccer.
Fewer available high-school kickers would first become obvious in the non-AQ conferences and the lower level of the larger conferences. See: PSU, and Cal(as indicated above)
On the other side of this, it may not be new at all. I can remember when I was at BG in the late '70s that the football team put out an all-campus call for anyone who had kicked in high-school to come and try out for the team. I don't really recall how bad it had gotten or if there was an injury.
our punting issues sucked before 2006 so the recruiting team busted ass to get the top punter in the nation at the time alonso rijos, i think thats how you spell it but that didnt work out i know he plays for the kansas jayhawks , anyways this off-season the recruiting team or whoever recruits special team players need to work off there tail , to get one of the best kickers in the nation , im not saying you gotta get the top top kicker but try to get one of the top kickers in the nation. true ratings dont mean a thing (anyone can bust or be a boom), but who knows getting on of the top kickers could help or even juco route or even god who knows have brian schmidebush try kicking hes got a leg for punting maybe he'll work on kicking who knows look at quinn sharp from okc state ..but yeah this is my view on kicking situation..

I don't care if 100 of the 124 FBS teams are struggling with kicking or not. What I do care about is that BG is. I want other teams to struggle with it, just not us.

BG only has a 52% FG% under Clawson's tenure, so I think perhaps he and his staff's evaluation of talent should be looked at more closely.
