...we are a lot better than Rhode Island, a little better than Idaho, and not as good as Florida, Toledo and Virginia Tech.
This team is still an unknown.

And that Anthon Samuel is the only big threat and game changer we have on offense.

Hosley...he looked a step faster than any of our WR's on thet first catch. Took a 5 yard throw and turned it into a 30 yard gain...

I think Rollo is absolutely right. We're 5 weeks into the season, and here are my thoughts.
1.We played an absolute clunker at Virginia Tech. Typically, BG plays at least one of these games every year, even in good years (think Western Michigan in 2005, Miami in 2007, or Marshall in 2009). VT isn't that great, as Cincinnati proved yesterday.
2.Florida is the best team we've played, followed by Toledo. The Rockets could be making a push for the rankings by season's end, and could already be had they not lost in overtime in week 1. Florida meanwhile, is undefeated, and could be ranked in the top 5 by next week if they beat LSU Saturday.
3.Idaho isn't very good. We kind of played down to their level, but got the win, which is ultimately what's most important.
But given these facts, we still have team that we know can beat the dregs of I-A, but can't beat good teams. So we have to ask the following question. Who do we have left to play that is "good"?
I count three teams, one whom is really, really good in Ohio, and two others in Miami and Kent State that are at least decent and look like they are bowl-caliber. So my heart is telling me based on this that our best case scenario is 8-4, worst case 6-6, depending on how the Miami and Kent games go.
HOWEVER, as we all know, BGSU has shown a tendency to get caught napping in games they should win, ESPECIALLY at home. So the Oct 27 game against Eastern Michigan really gives me goosebumps, as does this week's contest against Akron. The Zips seem like a team that should have more than 1 win so far, and they're not the pushover they used to be. We're going to have to play well to beat them.
This has been a very misdirected post, but as Rollo said, we still don't know a lot. But we do know the first order of business. BEAT AKRON!!!

I will stick to what I said 2 weeks ago now that the Rhode Island game is over. This team is capable of winning or losing every game on the schedule. It's the MAC, no team is head and shoulders better than us and you can say the same for use not being head and shoulders better than any one team. After the Florida game I thought the Umass and Akron games should be easy wins, but those 2 teams seem like they are making strides each week.
We have to find a go to receiver that we can rely on each week IMO. Production from the WR unit has been very inconsistent. Now that the UF's and VT's are gone I hope we see some steady play and improvement.

Stokes, Givens, Samuel, Burbrink, Gallon, Bayer and Joplin are all capable MAC starters. I think we have a a ton of WR, TE and RB talent.
I don't think our QB is above average.
I think our OLine is below average.
I think our playcalling and/or our ability to get the ball into players hands to make plays is well below average.
Not too many thoughts about D. Chris Jones is very good.

Woods, Lynch, and Swan are all very good linebackers.
Gabe Martin has been a pleasant surprise this year.
BooBoo doesn't seem to be a difference maker on defense this year. Could be the position switch.
Overall I think this is a very good defense. Outside of the first half against Toledo they have played well all year. Even that game the defense kept them in it while the offense went 3 and out again and again.

Samuel needs more touches here on out. Guy is a playmaker. Hope Hosley sees more PT as well, kid looks like he has the speed to make good things happen. Playcalling was better against Rhody, but it remains to be seen what we show up with vs. MAC opponents. Defense has been great, I think BG has the best overall DL and LB corps in the MAC. Secondary still needs to be better on man-to-man pass coverages.
Overall, I think the team is improving, we'll know much more this weekend vs. Akron
