What the bowl picture looks like right now

When I got home last night I did my best to break down the bowl picture as the games all wrapped up. To the best of what I was able to put together after all the results last night, out of the 124 teams in the FBS, 46 of the them are not eligible for a bowl right now (that includes teams such as OSU, PSU, UNC and UTSA which have winning records and can't go). That leaves 78 teams available right now for the 70 spots. There are 13 schools that will play next week that will get knocked out with a loss, but will also get in with a win. There are also a couple teams that are .500 with two games left. At my best guess, we're either going to be one of the last ones in, or one of the last ones left out. Bottom line is, we need go beat Buffalo to help our case for a chance at a last team in situation and hope most of those 13 teams mentioned about lose.

CBS updated their projections and has BG heading back to Idaho to play Utah State. Ball State is the MAC team left out. Gotta win Friday to solidify the bowl resume.

Military Bowl would be fun. Love DC.

If BG wins Friday and Kent beats Ohio, OU may be left out. BG/BSU/Toledo would likely tie for 6-2 in the conference, Ohio would be 4-4. Not sure they would get in.

We might be 8-4 and not go to bowl game. That's problematic.

I think that's what I came up with too. 62 teams are currently eligible for 70 spots. And 16 others are still alive. It looks like about half of those will be dogs in games they must win, ie. Missouri at Texas A&M. Then there are teams that wouldn't be in front of an 8-4 BG team, like Central Michigan.

Wake Forest (5-6) v Vanderbilt
Virginia Tech (5-6) v Virginia
UConn (4-6) at Louisville, v UC
Pitt (4-6) v Rutgers, at S Florida
Marshall (5-6) at East Carolina
SMU (5-6) v Tulsa
Rice (5-6) at UTEP
Central Michigan (5-6) at UMass
Troy (5-6) at Middle Tennessee
W Virginia (5-5) at Iowa State, v Kansas
Iowa State (5-5) at Kansas, v W. Virginia
Baylor (5-5) v Texas Tech, v Oklahoma St.
Michigan St (5-6) at Minnesota
Purdue (5-6) v Indiana
Missouri (5-6) at Texas A&M
Ole Miss (5-6) v Mississippi St

I think there will be exactly 70. No more than 72, unless there are some real surprises.

Va Tech, Rice, CMU, WVU, ISU, Baylor, MSU, and Purdue make it. Outside chance someone like Marshall / Troy pull an upset. Neither go bowling before BG.

Baylor could also lose their last 2.

Their is a better chance the MAC gets 7 teams- NIU, Kent, Toledo, BGSU, Ohio, Ball State, and CMU than there is BG missing out on a bowl. Even if they finish 7-5.

I believe Marshall could actually over BG based on the face that CUSA has five bowl tie-ins. Right now there are only three CUSA teams in, with three on the edge.

Does anyone know the actual pecking order or process for the MAC in terms of filling bowls outside of the MAC tie-ins? Does the conference try to place teams in bowls, or is it squarely on bowls pickings teams? For example, BG will likely finish in front of a team like Ohio in the conference standings and won the head-to-head matchup. However, OU has a marquee win over Penn State, was ranked in the Top-25, has a better season attendance figure and a catchy-named head coach. So which wins out?

As far as I know, the bowls can pick from whatever pool of teams that fit the criteria for the tie-ins. I believe there is a certain pecking order as far as what bowl gets to pick first though.

As I type this, both ESPN bowl projectors have BG going to the Military Bowl. One vs. San Jose St. and the other vs. Western Kentucky. CBS has BG playing in the BBVA Compass Bowl vs. LA-Monroe.

I live right here. It would be awesome to hop on the metro to go to the game. Now only if they let my gas grill on the metro ...

70 slots with 71 eligible is the forecast by Bowl Swami.com. Win Friday. Someone(s) may be literally COURTING us if things break a little right for us. Just win Friday to be sure.

(I made up Bowl Swami/that is my forecast. Often accurate/always biased.)

Go Falcons!

Funny thing as I looked at the OVERALL standings in the MAC....currently, KSU, NIU, OU, UT, BSU ALL have better overall records than we do.... Doesn't hit you right away as we tended to focus on a 6 game win streak, but last week, I'd honestly have to say that both NIU AND BSU looked better than we did on Saturday.
That being said, I'd love to get a shot at the Military Bowl in DC as I'd be close to my son's place in Alexandria...would LOVE to take him to a BG game, especially a bowl.

Factman is hoping things break far right. RWT and I would prefer they break a little to the left or stay in the center. 8-)
